For example, if the opinion polls do not reach 60-65%, Donald Trump should not be impeached?
Isn't it obvious that a majority of voters do not know shit from shinola? They vote for Congressmen and Senators to make big decisions for them.
Look at the gun issue with Republicans. Do they care that 90% of the people support background checks for gun purchases? No they do not.
It would be nice if those Congressmen on the right side of issue were able to persuade a huge majority to their side, but that should not be the sole criteria for passing legislation, in my opinion.
These people are paid to make the tough decisions, not those citizens that are asked a a question in a public opinion poll.

(6,110 posts)It all comes down to The House of Reps and senate politicians.
A simple majority in House to impeach, and 67 senators to remove president from office.
Which means we need minimum 20 republican senators to vote removal.

Question isn't just impeachment but "there is no way in he'll I will vote for him"
When that number hits 60 even GOP Senators in red states will be vulnerable.

(146,192 posts)Only the media gives a damn about it. Congress and the White House will do as they please. Individual members of the House and Senate might be concerned about public opinion in their state or district, but that's about it.
We don't vote on impeachment. Congress does.

(10,721 posts)...disregarding the will of the majority. They also know that there's a ceiling on support for removal. Between Trump's hardcore base and a depressingly ignorant public, we're never going to see support for removal reach the level we'd like.
