Left to his own devices, Trump would surely love to testify and testify in person on live TV.
He couldn't resist the invitation. He thinks he can charm anybody. Just think of the thrill of taking down his enemies and accusers face-to-face on live television. Huge ratings. I mean HUGE.
And he would win bragging points for juicing the ratings for the hearings which he would say were a snooze until he took the stage and woke everybody up!
Of course, no sane lawyer or adviser would urge him to do it. But Trump has now surrounded himself by a bunch of yes-persons. Even some of his legal "briefs" are clearly dictated at least in part by the man himself. He thinks he knows more about war than the generals, more about diplomacy than the diplomats, more about the economy than the economists, so why not more about the law than the lawyers?
Of course, the people around him will try to sit on him, chain him to his desk, etc. And his supporters had better hope that they succeed, for once, in making him keep his mouth shut.
But you gotta admire Pelosi's attempt. This is surely her most brilliant bit of gamesmanship yet ... she's trying to goad Trump into being a witness against himself ...
God, wouldn't it be grand if the gambit succeeded!

Trump won't ever give testimony. Even he knows it would be disastrous for him. In the past, his depositions have proven him to be a terrible witness against himself.
Besides, Trump is a coward. He could never stand up to real scrutiny and questioning. Deep down, he knows this about himself.

(21,998 posts)He's a loser.
He's also an idiot which is the only reason I think there's a very remote possibility that he would testify.
Ain't gonna happen.

(8,790 posts)The point should constantly be waved to the media that the precedent was set when Bill Clinton testified before congress during his impeachment hearings.
I guarantee the viewership would eclipse any previous record.

(333 posts)And if he's willing to answer written questions, then all the other knuckleheads who refuse to testify would need to testify also. Their reasons for not testifying is rebutted by trump's willingness to testify on paper. But if he does show up, it will be a perjury trap of his own making.

I am sure Moscow Mitch, Graham, and Grassley will come up with some sort of excuse that Trump's lies were not worthy of impeachment.
It's kind of a Hail Mary, but I wouldn't put it past Trump because he probably won't drop much farther in the polls no matter what he does.

If.he demands written Q and A make sure he swears an oath before he receives the questions and then swears under oath again when he submits the answers that they are HIS answers and are truthful.

(14,164 posts)Republicans actually overplay that hand now all the time. But Democrats shy away from any of it. When sometimes they could use a bit of drama.
My point being, that you just know that Fox News and other RW media will continue to cry how its all so one sided, and how Democrats are not allowing Trump to mount any defence. And so Democrats should set a date..maybe two weeks from now, for Trump to come in and be a witness and defend himself. Maybe also remind people how Hillary sat for 11 hours in a Benghazi hearing. Then, when he doesn't show up, don't cancel anything. Have a whole day where CSPAN, CBS, focuses on an empty chaiir, maybe even have Schiff or others question the empty chair. Do something to make a point and make it so dramatic that it can compete with other reality TV shows that hog all the eyeballs.

(218 posts)There is not a level playing field with the Republicans. We get called on things while Republicans get promoted for their extremes. Our Democratic leadership has to be much more careful, and clever. Pelosi is doing it well.

(99 posts)if Pelosi continues and intensifies the jabbing, à la ...
"Of course I *completely* understand that the President would not want to come and testify. Unlike Hillary Clinton who readily testified *for 10 hours* in the Bengazi hearings, he lacks the courage, stamina, and mental agility to handle the questions, and every day that he is not on the stand will remind America of that. But of course that is fine by the house majority, since it allows us to keep proper control over the proceedings."
Bwahaha
and then either:
1) WILD HORSES COULDN'T KEEP HIM AWAY and he shows up and starts incriminating himself in ten entirely new and original ways till Sunday,
or
2) his base grows disenchanted that he's letting "a little old lady" verbally spank him like that, repeatedly. They can forgive him anything, even cosying up to Putin, but not for being a p***y.

(23,926 posts)break both of his legs, before allowing him to testify under oath. He is, literally, a pathological liar, and would be unable to avoid perjuring himself multiple times within the first ten minutes of any deposition.
