Something we learned from reporting on the Mueller investigation was that several FBI counter-intelligence investigations spun off of Mueller's efforts. These are ongoing. But the House, so far, has not been updated with what the status of those investigations is...as is required by law. Schiff has demanded updates, with partial success I believe. The public isn't entitled to know about them, but the House is. We know that the CI often doesn't make their findings public because they are working on exploiting their knowledge to advantage. They aren't as interested in justice as they are in protection.
But what are the chances that all of these Trump-related conversations, meetings, texts, phone calls, and emails about Ukraine have escaped the notice of counter-intelligence world? Probably zero: US counter-intelligence and those of many other countries would have HIGH interest in all of this. There must be volumes of information...much more than we are hearing about from individual witnesses. They probably know who is telling the truth, who is hedging, who is guilty, who is not.
I'm guessing the US CI investigators know exactly what is going on and how it relates to Russia, 2016 and before, Turkey, Saudis, etc.. We may never hear about it directly from the FBI....but perhaps at some point there will be a merging of purposes between the House inquiry and CI investigations such that the House gains needed info? This may become more apparent after Sondland, in that the cat is out of the bag...and CI may view the House inquiry as a valid instrument that can address serious counter-intelligence/national security problems with the current administration?
Does the House have to go this alone...or...is there a chance CI can offer serious insight here?

(11,095 posts)and .. as you also point out, we may never know. There are probably serious constraints on what the intelligence community, individually or collectively, can and should do. There are real legal, ethical and structural problems/issues here .. and they are not small considerations.

(207 posts)Anything that goes to the House committees also goes to the Republicans. And then it goes to Trump and anybody else involved in being investigated, as we know, because the Repub lackeys in Congress are a protection racket right now. Best for CI to keep it quiet for now until it's safer for the info to get out because it will once the Repubs get it.
