Well ....

I've lived in Southern California all of my life (I'm almost 60), and remember WELL when it was a hideous Red State where I'd read day after day about African-Americans being choked to death thanks to the choke hold. I was over at a friends house for the week who lived near downtown Watts California, and remember the Watts Riots, and the the tanks rolling through the streets, and the national guard waving rifles all over and almost threatening us to get back inside--even though I was about 4 years old. And my older siblings REALLY remember the racism, bigotry and hatred here. Remember when Racist Ray Gun was the governor who turned vets and the mentally ill out onto the streets like cattle. Both of my parents, who were an inter-racial couple (Mom African-American, Dad was Native American although police thought he was Hispanic) were pulled over and stopped many a day living here in good old California. My late Mom told me about the time her youngest brother (He was a decorated Fire Chief during the Korean War), was arrested for merely driving his Japanese wife to/through Downtown Los Angeles where she was to take her American Citizenship test in the late 1950's. She was 6 months pregnant. He was a proud man, and he didn't take racist crapola off of "racist white devils" as my late Mom said he used to say. The judge on the bench, an older white gentleman asked the policemen WHY they arrested my uncle, they couldn't answer, and he told both policemen that they should be ashamed of themselves. And is this woman his wife? You stupid, racist assholes, she's pregnant. Sir, I'm sorry, he told my uncle. My uncle told him that he was a Army Veteran of the Korean War. With everyone in the court looking in utter amazement (Just him being black with a Japanese wife was enough to get major stares from folks back then), this judge got up out of his chair, leaned over the bench, and shook my uncle's hand and thanked him for his service to our country. I too am a Vet of the 2nd World War. I was in the Air Force. Both my uncle and his wife are no longer living now, but I love them and miss them SO much.

But here we are, and it's 2019 and thankfully, California is DEEEEEP Midnight blue, and where thuglicans don't have shit to say about anything out here, and where Orange County is NO MORE Not to say that there still isn't racism here in California--there most certainly IS. And I sure as hell understand the racism in red stated or down in the deep south (My late parents both knew slaves, and both relayed many of the horrific stories they told me about that the slaves told them about which still haunt me to this day), but for what California has become, it sure wasn't always this way. That's for sure.

The NEW Orange County as of 2018/2019.

We're gerrymandered to no end, our state employees are the worst paid in the nation, we still haven't expanded Medicaid, we're kicking tons of low income children off CHIP, we have 3 cities in the top 10 most violent in the nation (StL, KC, Springfield). Our long term care centers have a higher than national average rate of abuse, we have unpermitted open carry and the effect is now being used as a "what not to do", along with loopholes you can drive a Mac Truck through. Don't get me started on reproduction rights, race relations, etc.

We have beautiful scenery and lovely state parks, which our politicians are trying to sell off. Our test scores are low, public transportation is awful and we are losing rural hospitals left and right.

I'm involved in campaigns statewide. I know what's going on. Do we have potential? Yes, but it's buried deep and unless others are willing to help it won't be uncovered anytime soon.

I live here, I graduated from high school and college here in Missouri. My daughter is a hs grad and working on her degree here at one of our state universities. (Go Mules.) I'm in Jeff City several times while in session. To pretend it isn't corrupt and to defend it is to refuse to see the truth. It's a set up for disaster.

Btw, RtW is going to be reintroduced again and again. The only way to stop it is to either vote those assholes out or change our state constitution. Changing the constitution would be easier.

I had a long talk with her during the 2012 campaign. She admitted flat out that it was a race she was certain to lose until her idiot opponent invented the term "legitimate rape," and then said a woman's body could shut down becoming pregnant from such an assault.

She had no illusions, and knew her next opponent wouldn't make the same stupid mistake, and that her time in the Senate was done after 2018. She knew her state. I knew many of her votes wouldn't be what I wanted, but I liked her plenty.

For fun, I once asked her to give California Peggy a call, but Peggy hung up on her because she didn't believe a U.S. Senator would be calling her out of the blue (my fault for not warning her, but I wanted it to be a surprise).

Happier days--at her office on Jan. 3, 2013, celebrating her swearing in for her new term:
