Just got a full screen pop-up NRA ad here at DU!

It was an anti -Bloomberg ad, pitching the usual nonsense that he's going to "take away your guns" so you should join the NRA.

I had to close it to get it out of my way.

I guess it's to be expected at a political discussion site, but... I'm logged in! Perhaps my Star Membership has lapsed...

Anyhow, is this from Google ads or what?

You don't have a star by your name and I'm not seeing ads. Throw in a couple of bucks and the NRA will be gone!

While we're at it, take a look at your image hosting at photobucket, because your intended signature line image isn't showing up.

4. And now you'll get another one because you mentioned the NRA & you have no member star

It's not our admins; it's a Google algorithm for ads.

Paying for membership to get the ads blocked is a bargain, imo.

Google ads are served up without pre-review, but if you find an ad that is inappropriate you can report it and the admins can request it be removed from future ad feeds.

We would get money for the display, for the click, and, in some cases, if you bought something (or donated) from them. Don't quote me for specifically about DU tho.

10. Ad algorithms aren't actually very smart

Or, rather, ad purchasers aren't. They gleaned "interested in US politics" and just bid it out to the first campaign that only specified that.

17. What's a "full screen pop-up" ad?

I don't ever see those, even when I'm visiting DU without logging in, and without any ad blocking.

It's possible you've got some kind of malware attached to your browser.

Most seem to be FB-related.

I'll pay more attention to what exactly I'm doing when I see them.

Hmm.

... it's big enough to push everything else out of the way.

So, hey, at least it's not a pop-up!
