...is not the damning evidence against Trump (after all, why should mere evidence bother a Senate Republican?), but all that might transpire between now and the time, many weeks from now, when Trump's removal is finally up for a vote in the Senate.
It's certainly possible that the stress of the impeachment proceedings, especially when the moment comes that the House almost inevitably passes articles of impeachment, will cause Trump to really flip out, and behave in ways that are extremely bizarre even by Trumpian standards.
Being stupid and nasty and whiny obviously doesn't bother "the base", but if Trump breaks down in a way that appears weak that might be the one thing that could start a few cracks running through his otherwise stubborn support.
Besides the impeachment, there are plenty of other possible stressors for Trump that could happen between now and a Senate vote. Trump's taxes could come out by then, for one thing. And who knows how many other unpleasant surprises and revelations await him, especially when they keep dropping at one or two per week?

In many if not most cases they are going to be entirely correct. In a handful or possibly a whole bunch of cases they will pay the penalty. In no conceivable universe branching off of the current moment will most of them reverse their course to date.
