(8,989 posts)Virtually rust proof steel. Incredibly strong body "frame".
Interior spacious for 6 people.
Decent cargo bed with fold down ramp.
Air compressor.
220 volt power outlets or is it 120?
Glass probably unbreakable in normal driving - no more stone chips or crack.
No more oil changes or smog tests.
Low cost maintenance.
Million mile battery life.
Air ride adjust - low ride for less resistance when on highways. Higher ride for off road.
Low cost compared to certain other trucks.
The style may not appeal but much else does.

(5,541 posts)The fundamentals are fantastic, I would be very interested in one... After they take the LSD away from the body design team and complete a do over on the exterior.

(146,192 posts)as well as off-road. No doubt it will be AWD, since there's no reason not to do that with an EV.
Is that it's final form? impossible to say, really. It may just be, in the interest of making it unique and instantly recognizable.
Who will buy it? Well, that's the question, isn't it?

(146,192 posts)and other electronics and appliances in my truck below. I was taking them to a community disposal day. The volunteers unloaded all that stuff from every direction, as well. Took a couple of minutes. If they had been force to unload only from the rear, it would have been a much bigger job. Pickups need to be practical more than they need to be stylish.

(146,192 posts)on what the load is. The beauty of the standard rectangular pickup bed is that what it in the bed is accessible. Of course, as pickups have gotten higher and higher off the ground, reaching in over the side of the bed isn't possible in some large pickups at all. That's one of the reasons I like mid-sized and small pickups for my own needs.
For me, a pickup is primarily a box on wheels that I can drive somewhere with a load in the back. The bed has no usefulness other than that, in the way I use it. I don't go off-roading. My pickup is strictly a cargo carrying vehicle by design. Which is not to say that I don't also use it as a general purpose vehicle for other reasons. But, i wouldn't own a pickup except that I sometimes need to load large, bulky, heavy, awkward, or dirty items into it for whatever reason. I have a ramp I can use for loading or unloading, as well.
But, I'm not the only kind of pickup owner, by any means. Some people with pickups almost never put anything in the bed. They use their vehicle for other reasons, some of which are simply psychological. They might be interested in the futuristic, almost militaristic appearance of this Tesla vehicle. i don't know. There's also a sort of status in owning an impractical truck, I suppose. I don't get any of that. I just want something I can haul crap from one place to another.

Oh, Elon....(faints)

(9,086 posts)This cyber-truck is ugly, to put it bluntly. I also question its ability to load: most pick-up truck owners load from the rear.
Frankly, I expected a design reminiscent of recent military trucks or some of the experimental designs from the late 1950s: a conventional truck bed on a steel frame, a truncated or shortened hood, angled downwards since it had no need for a large radiator and an internal-combustion engine, and conventional truck cab.
That thing is so ugly it will make Edsels look popular.

On edit, our truck is a 1984 (I think) Ford F-250. It hauls stuff, is a stick shift and we went and got classic plates for it. Its also beat to shit

(146,192 posts)Not to traditional pickup buyers, but to neo-survivalist types. Not the right-winger survivalists, but the off the grid types. It doesn't look like a pickup. It doesn't even look like a motor vehicle, really. It will have a certain appeal to non-traditionalist who will admire it's radical departure from typical vehicle design. The only drawback will be money. That class of non-traditionalists generally has not much of that. But, for the ones who do, it's a good look and "off the grid." For them, it would be uber-styling to drive one of those.

(54,770 posts)The Tesla Cybertruck looks like it was dropped off by an alien race, but it has the capabilities to challenge all of the top-selling pickup trucks.
With a sharp-edged exterior that is made of scratch- and dent-resistant stainless steel, Tesla's all-electric truck is seriously tough. Along with standard all-wheel drive, the Cybertruck can tow up to 14,000 pounds and has an estimated driving range of 500-plus miles. While that applies only to the most expensive model, the cheapest one starts at $39,900.
Of course, there's still a lot we don't know about the Cybertruck, including when it will officially go on sale. Right now, it looks as if the first versions will go into production in late 2021.

(146,192 posts)as long as there's a performance element to it. OTOH, that magazine also sometimes rewards odd cars top marks. For example, the KIA Soul, which doesn't even offer an AWD option, was C&D's top compact SUV in 2019. I own one, and don't consider it an SUV at all.
Still, wait until they get their actual hands on one of those Cybertrucks. Who knows what they'll think then?

(951 posts)It's actually just practicality baked down to its essence.
How many guys have big tough trucks, but never use them as such because they are afraid to damage it? This thing can be made with just a freaking press-break, and you don't even have to worry about surface finish. From pictures, it looks like the back bed cover either comes off or telescopes in on itself, so there is still a usable 6.5 foot bed. Only trailer hitches or goose necks, no fifth wheels.
Tesla makes some of the most elegant looking cars on the road today, and their 2020 roadster is simply magnificent. This ain't those. You are meant to use this thing hard.
It is utilitarian without being boring, and I have to imagine it can be assembled and repaired easily.
I was having a little trouble imagining people using their Tesla truck hard, but not now.
