Russian interference (including vote/voter manipulation).

(36,452 posts)They've had to resort to lying, cheating, & stealing to get the power they currently have. And if we thought the lying & cheating & stealing was bad before, they are going to pull out all the stops for 2020. They are too close to their goal of rigging our representative government to represent only them, to back off now.

(58,637 posts)because a weak federal government favors their Randian libertarian views vis-a-vis corporate "freedom."
And the last thing they want is a bunch of international treaties trying to make trade more "fair."

(58,785 posts)A weak nation would be very contrary to the nature of most conservatives, who almost all are sure we have enemies we must defend ourselves against. That's actually huge on the right overall.
A weak federal government over domestic policy is different, and there is certainly some validity to that. But even there conservatives tend authoritarian; they want a balance but overall one that provides a government able to protect society's institutions against the power of individuals. It's liberalism they want weak.
Even libertarian billionaires notably want protections for their booty. But most aren't actually libertarian at all, just conservatives trying to dress their motives up, and they invest heavily to create strong RW federal government that'll work for them. Like their enormous Tax Heist financial crime. They want laws written that will decrease the ability of smaller businesses to compete, even run them out of business. It's liberals and taxes and any regulations that don't help them they want gone.
But in any case, it's always a mistake to ascribe the noise of relative extremists to the whole. By definition, those on the fringes don't represent the vast midrange. In other words, don't listen to the Christopher Hitchens out there or Bernie Sanders apologists to find out what your RW neighbors think: ask the neighbors.

(15,642 posts)middle east, and -- by consequence -- geopolitically strengthens Russia. Exactly what Putin wants.
And these self-centered, short-sighted, greedy, white supremacist bigots who make up the GOP don't give one iota as long as they get what they want -- free reign.
Here's what in my belief is the kicker: the actually think it doesn't matter because we are bigger, badder, stronger than Russia and anybody else and if push comes to shove, we can just beat the crap out of them. To them, it's the Game of Thrones.

(33,320 posts)I should've been more clear and less rushed.
We have oligarchs around the world fighting against all forms of government that restrict their accumulation. Our own media industry has undergone considerable consolidation since Reaganites came along. They will not give up power easily.
We still have excellent journalists, thankfully. They just don't have a wide a reach as the conglomerates.
