A group of hunger strikers protested peacefully in Pelosi's office. Then they decided to storm it.

The hunger strike inside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to protest inaction on climate change wasn’t going well Thursday.

It was day four without food for nine young strikers who vowed to stay until the bitter end, and Pelosi (D-Calif.) had not come close to meeting their demand to talk with them for an hour on camera about her leadership on the issue. They were allowed to squat at the entrance to her office on the plush blue carpet and quietly draw signs with Sharpies, but aside from that, it was almost as if Pelosi didn’t know they were there.

And so, weak and dizzy for lack of food, they gathered in a circle in the hallway and came up with a plan.

With the little energy they had left, they would storm past two aides, barge into the wider room where the congresswoman’s chief of staff and others sat, get arrested by police and make a statement that they were there to protest the “lip service” House Democrats paid to an issue that would impact their future.

This doesn't help.

For god's sake, environmental groups around the world were happy and greatly relieved when Democrats won the house. "Thrilled" was the word used by the League of Conservation Voters, who've been keeping records and ratings for all congressional legislators since 1971 on environmental, climate, agricultural, energy, etc., issues. Most Democrats have annual scores of 100% these days, Republicans 0%.

Republicans still control the senate, but the "green firewall" is the LCV's term for Democrats who've been blocking harmful legislation from Republicans in legislatures across the nation.

Just maybe find out who our nation's big climate warriors are and just who smile whenever groups and statements like this prove their lies are still serving them so well in spite of all evidence.

And, btw, you really should reject like poison anyone who claims Democrats aren't much better than Republicans. It's a massive, toxic, self-proving lie that turns wannabe warriors into tools.

and it's working, people are talking about it aren't they? We need to get some visible things going right now - like a total ban on leaf blowers for one. Easy, visible and doable.

are obstructions, giving phony lip service to climate change, who must be forced to work. That is an incredibly ignorant and harmful lie to believe, and pushing it publicly is a moral crime. A huge moral crime given the enormity of this crisis.

Do you even know many EXPERT, EXPERIENCED climate warriors are IN congress and other legislatures, who ran for office to fight for strong action from inside the centers of power? Every single one ran to join our Democratic caucuses. And they're busy studying incredibly complex issues involved, working with the nation's and planet's TOP experts in and out of governments, writing bills, and waiting for the people to give them the power to turn the legislation they've written into laws.

You might want to look into the deep motivations and backgrounds of this group's leaders. Yes, people can really be this stupid and deluded, and no doubt some are pathetically sincere. But when actions so definitively conflict with a group's claimed agenda, it's very smart to question just what that really is.

the generational boomer-hate meme we're also seeing pushed here.

Unfortunately, those prone to radicalism/extremism tend to lack insight and self awareness and don't understand themselves half as well as those who use them with varying degrees of success every election.

do this - don't do THAT etc. Let them do what they think is best, other people can organize their own optimal protest at a deniers office.

We can do both.

Assuming one is not doing hard physical labor and is getting enough water people who are not already compromised should not be ‘...weak and dizzy..’ at the end of four days; grouchy and maybe a bit headachy, but not weak or dizzy. I can whip out 50 years of experience fasting up to 30 days, with groups of people from various backgrounds, in some cases doing substantial work, to back that up.

It certainly should not have effected judgement, which seems to have been somewhat impaired. OTOH, these folks may have already been working without all their resources allocated to their decision making processes. Poor choice of target, poor choice tactics, and poor choice of demands.

Sorry, this boomer awards them 0 points for this action.

IMHO, FWIW, YMMV.

While I understand what others here are saying about the option of aiming this protest at a climate change denier, I respect that these young people are sincere in their effort. I hope that this type of thing grows -- both on climate change and gun control -- and I'd recommend that they consider aiming at republicans. I keep in mind that young people think differently than old people like myself. And I'm confident that they will learn from experience.
