DHS weighs online applications for Real ID as 2020 deadline looms

With an October 2020 deadline looming, the Department of Homeland Security is requesting proposals for ideas that could allow states to accept online applications for the federally mandated Real ID, a change that would potentially end the requirement for an in-person visit, which critics say is outdated and unnecessary.

Allowing online applications would help expedite services at state departments of motor vehicles that are experiencing long lines and wait times as they scramble to issue millions of new driver’s licenses and ID cards that conform with the sweeping federal law that tightens security requirements for state-issued identification.

Starting Oct. 1, every U.S. air traveler will be required to present a Real ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, to board a domestic flight. This is the last phase of implementation of the federal law.

With only 10 months for the change to take effect, less than a third of driver’s license holders have a compliant license, according to data compiled by the federal government. That low number concerns federal and state officials and travel industry leaders who fear millions could be turned away at airports next fall. State-issued identification is the most commonly used credential at airport security checkpoints.

Roll Out was supposed to be in the spring. I have contact the DMV several times. Got a email this week that stated if I still want a Real ID, that I could TRY to make an appointment for the one place (Manahawkin), that they have it in South Jersey.
Hell last September I processed the paperwork for a Passport and got in the mail three weeks later

mention of the fact I would not get a star. At the previous renewal the said old people didn't have to provide documentation even though I had it along. They will end up extending the deadline yet again.

They pretty much have to extend or get away from this non-sense.

2/3 non compliant is more than enough to shutdown the airline industry.

I was given a temporary license as my new one won't arrive for 2-3 weeks. I did upgrade to the enhanced license which is accepted by Canada, Mexico and many Caribbean nations.

having a copy of her 60-year-old marriage license when she went to get a RealID. Surprisingly easy and inexpensive to order from the City of New York.

I needed the SS card, birth certificate, and current driver's license for the Enhanced Driver's License which is RealID complient and my VA Veteran Health Identification Card so my license would identify me as a veteran.

"The Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) is a special driver’s license that allows Michigan motorists to cross into the U.S. when traveling by sea or land from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean nations without the need for a passport or other identification documents. Explore the links below for more information about the EDL and the requirements for obtaining one."

"The veteran designation gives veterans an easy and optional way to prove their veteran status to receive discounts from businesses. Eligible veterans may get the designation by visiting any Secretary of State office or when renewing through the mail. The designation is available when you apply for an original or renewal Michigan license or ID at no additional charge. "

This is a topic that just gets me so angry! George W. Bush changed all this nomenclature to the fascist labels that must have given him a boner. I HATE IT. I want it all changed back to the way it was before.
