Hang on to your dangling chads. Vote count error may mean Santorum squeezes by Romney in Iowa.

Appanoose County man claims Romney vote total is wrong

By Michael Schaffer - Managing editor Daily Iowegian
CENTERVILLE

Edward L. True, of Moulton, claims in an affidavit Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's caucus vote total is wrong.
True writes Mitt Romney in his precinct of Washington and Wells township was given credit for 22 ballots when he actually only received two.

...

"I talked to Appanoose County officials and their numbers matched mine," True said by telephone Thursday night. "It's the state's numbers that don't match."
True said he was one of three people to count the ballots Tuesday night and said with 100 percent certainty Romney's total is off by 20.

Or so they're saying now.

In an interview with Fox News Channel’s Greta van Susteren, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum pooh-poohed any idea that he actually won the Iowa Caucus, an assertion some supporters are making after one caucus attendee reported an apparent clerical error that over-counted Mitt Romney’s support by 20 votes.

“Here’s what I know. Having talked to the chairman of the — Matt Strawn, who’s the chairman of the Iowa — Republican Party of Iowa, that all these counties are going to be reporting in,” Santorum said. “They’re going to be certifying them, that there was one county where there was a 20-vote mistake in my favor, but there was a 21-vote mistake vote in Romney’s favor. So it actually netted out to what I understand is a one-vote difference,” Santorum said.
