GOP 2012: What they (wouldn't) cut

http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/05/news/economy/budget_cuts/index.htm

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- For all their differences, the 2012 Republican contenders have at least one thing in common: They all want to cut spending.

Problem is, the candidates lack a set of realistic, specific proposals that stand even a small chance of becoming law.

On the hunt for specific budget cuts, DeHaven combed through the economic plans listed on each candidate's campaign website.

By way of contrast, Romney and Santorum list only a few programs they want to axe, despite their big promises.

At the termination of that debate, a large number of spending cuts were left to the super committee to identify. Why? Because lawmakers couldn't agree on specific programs to cut.

And of course, the super committee then failed at the same task, despite overwhelming pressure and an extended deadline.

What they're going to DO seems to be some complicated individualistic mix of "fuck things up at random", "refuse to do anything at all, even wipe", "sell out to my buddies as fast as possible" and "sell out to big business as fast as possible".

You can argue a mistaken person out of a factual error, but you can't argue a liar out of a lie.

What they're going to SAY is whatever noises they see people responding to. If everyone got all emotional about a song in Malagasy (I'd suggest "Hana" by Tarika Sammy, from the Kaiser/Lindley compilation, but choose your own), they'd all shortly be parroting phrases in Malagasy with no more or less understanding of their meaning than that these noises made people behave differently.

Well good, as long as they can all agree that we need to spend over a trillion dollars every year on defense.

And by defense, I mean of course the necessity to have military bases in over 100 countries...and to make sure that the skies over Germany are safer than the skies over our own eastern seaborad...that kind of defense.

Any amount of cutting will do nothing if we're still occupying the globe with our soldiers.
