One eye this time. The other eye is next.
Then she needs surgery on her hands to straighten her fingers.
Then she needs a 2nd new knee.
Hopefully she wont need anything else after all that for awhile.
She just turned 79
All of that is scary enough but to do it during this virus scare, knowing Im gonna be there with her all those times kinda makes me nervous for myself as well as her.

(4,079 posts)My husband just had both of his eyes done a few months ago--right after a couple of gum surgeries. Of course, we didn't have the virus scare to worry about.
Will send good vibes your way.

(5,223 posts)Cataract surgery is painless and quick. Just be sure we used the eye drops needed afterwards. Good luck. Been there, done that, and wash those hands!

(9,426 posts)My son just had his cataracts removed, the surgery is a breeze. The drops are expensive, but absolutely necessary. He just received the bill, $58,000. Fortunately he has insurance, so most will be paid for. The surgery is straight forward now, unlike what it was several years ago.

(527 posts)It only takes 10 minutes or so and is not painful. Do assure that she does all follow up with drops and covering her eye when sleeping. Recovery was easy, I even drove myself to the next day appointment.
Healing vibes being sent to her.

(16,783 posts)The prep takes longer. Hubby getting a 2nd one in April.
I have had 3 eye surgeries. 2 in one eye to replace a lens that slipped out of place after 7 years because it was not suture in place.

(1,529 posts)his second eye surgery mentioned how easy his first one was. My mom had hers done and she has 20/20 vision now and uses reading glasses. She reads like a fiend now.

(6,513 posts)It's hard to be a caretaker. Your Mom is so lucky to have you watching her back.
Take care of yourself, too.
I am curious about her fingers, but I didn't want to really ask. I have a family inherited situation where the cords in my fingers can thicken and draw the fingers down. It's called Dupuytren's disease. My brother had it and he did have an operation to straighten them up. It only affects the last two fingers. I don't have it, but my fingers are a bit stiff. Could just be arthritis, but that's what my family has. I never met anyone else who has that. Just curious.

(17,530 posts)My wife and I have both had both eyes done in the recent past. The procedure is quick and painless, the recovery is swift and the results were wonderful. The worst part is the eye drop schedule. Usually done in an outpatient surgery center, the place is likely to be safer and cleaner that most places where you come in contact with people.
Your mom will come out with a new appreciation of the colors that have been dimming over the years.

(5,268 posts)I was relieved last week as spouse and I got our new crown and bridge work finished with dentist.
Hope your mom will have as good results from cataract surgery as I had and everyone else I know. I had both eyes done 10 years ago and continue enjoying nearly 20/20 for driving and TV and all but close up reading and computer work. Couple of my friends (including one who does not drive) preferred the lenses that provide better closeup vision and are happy as well.
