Coronavirus has likely been spreading undetected for about six weeks in Washington state, where the first U.S. death from covid-19 was reported this weekend. A genetic analysis of the virus from a newly diagnosed patient in Snohomish County closely matched that of a specimen from the first known coronavirus patient in the U.S., who traveled from China in January.
The evidence overwhelming suggests that these cases are linked through community transmission, researchers say, and that this has been going on for weeks, likely with hundreds of infections.
The United States, Australia and Thailand each reported their first coronavirus-related deaths over the weekend, all in the span of about 12 hours. Covid-19 has now killed patients on four continents, with the global death toll climbing toward 3,000.
The first U.S. death, in Washington state, was man in his 50s with underlying health conditions, health officials said. The patient had no recent travel history or contact with people known to be infected, suggesting he may have been infected through person-to-person transmission, officials said. It was not immediately clear when he was admitted, when his symptoms first appeared or how long it took health officials to test him ...

(118,278 posts)... At the start of an outbreak the apparent mortality rate can be an overestimate if a lot of mild cases are being missed. But this week, a WHO expert suggested that this has not been the case with Covid-19. Bruce Aylward, who led an international mission to China to learn about the virus and the countrys response, said the evidence did not suggest that we were only seeing the tip of the iceberg. If borne out by further testing, this could mean that current estimates of a roughly 1% fatality rate are accurate. This would make Covid-19 about 10 times more deadly than seasonal flu, which is estimated to kill between 290,000 and 650,000 people a year globally ...
... The development of a viable vaccine continues apace, with several teams now testing candidates in animal experiments. However, the incremental trials required before a commercial vaccine could be rolled out are still a lengthy undertaking and an essential one to ensure that even rare side-effects are spotted. A commercially available vaccine within a year would be quick ...

(6,110 posts)first there is no vaccine yet, and second it is new virus and people have not developed resistance to it.
Best defense against any virus is STAY STRONG AND HEALTHY! And wash hands every chance you get.
If I was going to be sick with something I prefer covid-19 over cancer, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, MS,
Parkinson's disease, small pox, leprosy, polio, rheumatic fever, yellow fever, liver or kidney disease, etc.

... That Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, which killed at least 50 million people worldwide, has been the benchmark for pandemics ever since. For decades public health experts have called for preparations for another big one yet adequate preparations were never made.
Nobody knows if the coronavirus will be a big one, for it may still fizzle. As of this writing, only one person is known to have died from it in the United States, while thousands routinely die annually from the seasonal flu. But increasingly, experts are saying that we should get ready just in case.
Are we seeing a replay of 1918? asked The New England Journal of Medicine, a publication not associated with alarmism. Bill Gates, who for years has been warning presciently about the danger of pandemics, bluntly cautions that this virus could be a once-in-a-century pandemic.
I hope its not that bad, but we should assume that it will be until we know otherwise, Gates said, and that seems prudent ...

... The administrations continued dismissal of the severity of the situation has also exacerbated concerns that it has not taken the threat seriously enough and that it is already in a weakened position because of funding and personnel cuts to health programs.
The Trump administration has repeatedly proposed significant cuts to health and science agencies, including in the 2021 budget, in which he called for a close to 10% reduction in Health and Human Services funding overall and a nearly 16% slash at the CDC.
While Congress has ignored those proposed cuts and instead increased funding to the CDC and National Institutes of Health, some initiatives aimed at battling epidemics have been cut or eliminated.
In 2018, when the White House declined to provide the agency with additional resources, the CDC downsized by 80% programs designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The same year, the administration shuttered the National Security Councils global health security unit ...
