(it's kind of a feature of many here at DU that we don't care for ad hominem attacks against Democratic leaders and party. perhaps that's where you gained the impression that people wanted to "muzzle" her. that would obviously be a mistake, but she could be encouraged at times to be more of a team player?).
At the same time, she is such an enormous figure and political talent .. so obviously articulate, charismatic and brilliant .. such an amazing asset that I am always more than happy to have this young woman on my team! Emphasis, my team. And .. a lot of us are anticipating great things down the road.

(1,668 posts)They have laid stake to one "faith" and are using it as justification for as an extension of power. It is precisely what the founding fathers tried to avoid. There are three things that bother me here.
1) Can we please say GOP. If I were to look at my beliefs you'd have to say that I'm a republican (note the small r,) continuing to bless this band of authoritarian (if I'm being kind) with a respectable sounding belief system is really galling.
2) Why the "mainline" denominations are not pushing back on this is concerning. If all evil needs to triumph is good men to do nothing, then how do you line the "mainline" groups up.
3) Quoting scripture won't do any good. They'll just go look up the inverse hammer quote and pat themselves on the back.

(268,870 posts)They use religion to further their agenda and the latest prosperity gospel is merely the neo-liberal version of institutional religion. (7,411 posts)Glad she did so, but folks have been pointing this out for a long time. Here's what one downtrodden fellow from the Oklahoma boonies penned nearly a century ago.
Jesus Christ by Woody Guthrie
Jesus Christ was a man who traveled through the land
Hard working man and brave
He said to the rich, "Give your goods to the poor"
So they laid Jesus Christ in His grave
Yes, Jesus was a man, a carpenter by hand
His followers true and brave
One dirty coward called Judas Iscariot
Laid poor Jesus in His grave
He went to the preacher, He went to the sheriff
Told them all the same
"Sell all of your jewelry and give it to the poor"
So they laid Jesus Christ in His grave
When Jesus come to town, all the working folks around
Believed what he did say
The bankers and the preachers, they nailed Him on the cross
And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
And the working people followed him around
Singing and shouting gay
But the cops and soldiers nailed him in the air
And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Well the people held their breath when they heard about his death
Everybody wondered why
It was the landlord and the soldiers that they hired
To nail Jesus Christ in the sky
This song was made in New York City
Of rich man and preachers, and slaves
If Jesus was to preach like He preached in Galilee
They would lay Jesus Christ in His grave
Yes, Jesus was a man and a carpenter by hand
His followers true and brave
One dirty coward called Judas Iscariot
As laid poor Jesus in His grave
Any student of history will nod along with the sentiment. Purely spiritual pursuits aren't what get you in trouble; it's the threat you represent to power. When Jesus threatened the power of Hebrew leaders, they ran to the Romans who didn't care about yet one more cult cropping up. It was only when the Hebrews could paint Jesus' actions as a threat to Roman power that he was executed by the state.
Same thing would happen today. Humans haven't really changed as much as we like to believe.

Master_Monstruwacan
(71 posts)But the only thing I could think of while listening to it is that, in order to bring about the world she describes, one in which religious discrimination no longer exists, the best solution is to shitcan religion altogether. No one needs a "god," or belief, or faith to treat other people with respect and dignity. I'd go as far as to say that the propagation of religious doctrines and dogmas more often results in the kind of behavior she is criticizing here. In the history of the human race, no one has ever produced an iota of solid, verifiable evidence that supports the existence of any gods. I can't remember the exact quote or who said it, but it goes something like, "people will never be truly free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest."

Matthew 5:1-12 New International Version (NIV)
Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes
He said:
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

But bullying is bullying, no matter the weapon you use. Selective quoting from the Bible is just intimidation, and saying 'I am allowed to, because religious freedom' is just a smoke screen.
Bullying is still bullying, it is still attempted intimidation, quoting from the Bible with evil intent behind it is still evil.
Be careful of it and fight against it, lest you wander too far from the true message from Jesus' life and end up in another Jonestown drinking the Kool-aid.
