Little vignette about Giuliani, Trump, Nadler and the Cuomos.

This story is from American Oligarchs by Andrea Bernstein.

Trump had given large campaign contributions to Giuliani and in 1995 Giuliani's Department of Housing Preservation and Development endorsed a Trump proposal seeking "$356 million in federal mortgage insurance intended for low-income housing. Trump wanted to build "massive silver towers along the Hudson River on Manhattan's Upper West Side."

Jerrold Nadler, congressman, and other elected officials "went ballistic." "They accused the city of 'colluding with Trump.' They said the 'tainted' application was a 'speculative scheme to subsidize luxury housing in an already largely affluent area.' "

The site would have had to be designated a "blight" area but it was in the "heart of one of the wealthiest, fastest growing areas of the city."

HUD was headed by Andrew Cuomo, who had done legal work for Trump, and Mario Cuomo was governor. Andrew determined that this subsidy would have been illegal.

Trump detailed what he did in his book How to Get Rich in the chapter "Sometimes You Have to Hold a Grudge".

I called Mario to ask for a perfectly legal and appropriate favor involving attention to a detail at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which at the time was being run by his son Andrew.
Trump continued: "Mario told me that this would be hard for him to do because he rarely calls the 'Secretary' on business matters. I said to him 'Mario, he is not the Secretary, he is your son."
Mario demurred.
Trump wrote: "I began screaming. 'You son of bitch! For years I've helped you and never asked for a thing, and when I finally need something, and a totally proper thing at that, you aren't there for me. You're no good. You're one of the most disloyal people I've known and as far as I am concerned, you can go to hell.'"
"My screaming was so loud that two or three people came in from adjoining offices and asked who I was screaming at. I told them it was Mario Cuomo, a total stiff, a lousy governor, I refuse to acknowledge him, talk to him, or even look at him."

Mario Cuomo's firm was working for Trump at the time. Trump threatened to fire the firm unless "M. Cuomo got A. Cuomo to approve the fraudulent use of the funds. M. Cuomo declined of course."

Mario Cuomo had standards and ethics. Trump is the dictionary definition of a bad example.
