Could coronavirus stop Ultra? Miami officials examining safety plans, daily updates

The 3 day festival is planned for the weekend of March 20th.

In a Monday press conference where Miami Mayor Francis Suarez spoke about the city’s preparations for coronavirus, the mayor said city administrators have asked organizers of the three-day electronic dance music festival to update the event’s safety and security plan to consider the possibility of COVID-19, the disease caused by novel coronavirus, spreading in South Florida.

The mayor said it was too early to speculate over whether the event might be canceled, but depending on the spread of the virus both in the U.S. and abroad, the question could become more urgent in the coming days. Public health and government officials might have to consider whether downtown Miami should host a festival with a capacity of 55,000 people per day, with a significant portion of the crowd made up of visitors from more than 100 countries.

“We’re monitoring on a day-to-day basis,” Suarez told reporters. “Right now, we don’t have any cases in the city or in the county, but what makes Ultra different is that it is an event that brings people from across the world.”

...On Feb. 27, a spokesman said festival organizers plan to have extra hand-sanitizing stations and to promote health tips related to coronavirus to concertgoers. As of late last week, there were “no plans to cancel, postpone, move or scale down” the festival, according to a statement....

Miami woman who traveled to Italy reportedly denied proper testing for coronavirus

MIAMI (CBS12) — A woman who recently returned from Italy was told by doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital that she "likely" has coronavirus, but they can't verify it because state and federal officials wouldn't conduct the necessary tests to confirm it, WFOR reported.

“The doctor himself told me that, you know, he thinks that the results of my [preliminary] tests mean that I most likely have the COVID-19, but that the Department of Health did not want to pursue it further,” the woman, who wants to remain unidentified, told WFOR. “It was either the Department of Health or the CDC that decided not to further pursue the inquiry. But I was basically told that it is most likely that I have this virus and that I should self-quarantine.”

The woman spent a week in Northern Italy, just as the virus was spreading in that region, according to WFOR. Afraid she would be trapped in Italy, she flew home to Miami International Airport on Feb. 26. She was told by her physician to go to Jackson to get tested for coronavirus.

Although the woman tested positive for previous strains of the coronavirus, the doctor couldn't verify it without a test conducted by the CDC in Atlanta, according to WFOR. One of the reasons why they wouldn't do the test is because she's not considered "high-risk," since she's in her 30s and "otherwise healthy."
