Edited to add about VP:
I was just thinking ahead to bad scenarios. I think Trump will try to win the election by throwing Pence overboard for Haley, having a blockbuster Republican National Convention with his new VP, and then try to ride his convention bounce to victory in November without the typical 3 Presidential and 1 VP debates. Throw a new VP nominee in for good measure and he probably will think he's done a fantastic job of distracting from his miserable record. Usually, debates erase the convention bounces but since Trump, in my eyes, is highly unlikely to debate the Democratic nominee this fall under any circumstances, what is a good way for the Democratic Nominee to regain momentum after the RNC? Given the media's fetish for Toad, it is quite possible that the Democratic Nominee will get next-to-no coverage in the fall if there aren't any debates to remind the media that it's not just Trump running for re-election here. That you know, millions of people turned out in primaries to nominate someone to throw the toad out of office and just because he's refusing to debate and had a successful RNC doesn't negate the fact that he still is the worst president in American History.
A lot of people will be fooled by the smoke and mirrors of the RNC, as always. So my fear is how we swing the pendulum back without debates?

(115,280 posts)He loves more than anything to be on TV and he thinks he's smarter than everybody else. He would absolutely believe he could crush his Democratic opponent with all of his beautiful words and he would not pass up a chance to show the world how brilliant he is. Yes, he is that deluded. I don't think any power on earth could keep him away from a debate.

Hopefully you're right though.

"Nikki" Haley always surprises me as someone that the deepest racist and women-hating republicans latch on to - she's of Indian descent and a woman and how they can twist and contort themselves to vote for her is surprising (in my opinion). I'll give her this, she is extremely adept at 'reading the tea leaves' for the political winds in S.C. to go all the way to the governorship in such a relatively short time.

(15,226 posts)There is not going to be an October surprise nothing Trump says or does should be a surprise. Right now the M$M is fascinated with Sanders vs Biden run. Trump will take the bait he really thinks he is infallible and if for no other reason will want a debate for ratings; Trump will expire as a reality TV actor.

(1,835 posts)And that's why I am not seeing his incentive to agree to debate here, especially given his dictatorial tendencies.

a lot of the result is image-based, and how one comes across. the Democratic nominee could have the most awesome coherent bundle of policy proposals ever and lose by using the wrong words. but mostly it's about Trump and there's nothing he likes to do more than suck all the oxygen out of a room. plus he'll immediately hold rallies in which he declares himself the victor regardless of how he actually performed.
Trump will debate, guaranteed.

(1,278 posts)the RNC will be held in my city in July. Guess who lives 90 miles away? That's right, Nikki Haley. It makes perfect sense from the presentation point of view. Not electorally, but the presentation is key.
