Million coronavirus tests won't be ready this week after all

Carlie Porterfield
Forbes Staff

Officials announced Thursday that the Trump administration’s promise of one million coronavirus tests for use this week won’t happen ...

The government is still days or even weeks from sending test kits out and providing training ...

“I’m afraid it becomes clear as each day goes by that the president’s initial dismissal of this threat was wishful thinking and not well-founded,” Steven Aftergood, the director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists ...

... Throughout his presidency, Trump previously slashed resources meant for dealing with the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. The administration’s most recent budget proposal recommended a 16% cut to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Is anyone surprised?

"Testing is the main weapon we have," said Dr. Keith Jerome, who heads the virology division at the (UW) medical school's department of laboratory medicine. "Until we have a vaccine, this is our major tool."

With 11 deaths its more likely there are 2000 or more cases at this point.
