What does Trump have over well qualified experts - like some of those infectious disease experts - that are working with Pence. They compromise their reputations by taking part in the deception and lies that Trump is pushing.
These are people that are there to keep the American People safe and yet they stand there behind Pence or Trump with blank stares on their faces and let Trump lie his ass off to us.
I really would like to see some of them resign their posts and come out at tell the American People what is really going on and how Trump is trying to deceive us.
How does Trump continually get away with his deceptions?
Are these people just worried about losing their jobs?
Right down the line he has his Party members (Senators and House Reps), Department Heads, White House Staff, etc - lie for him or protect him.
I just don't get it. Why don't these people just trust their reputations and integrity and tell it like it is?
Does Trump hypnotize them? He can't have 'kompromat' on everybody. Does he threaten their lives? What is this strange hold that he has over people?

(7,947 posts)Esper, the supposed Secy of Defense, has apparently told the military not to contradict Trump on the COVID-19 issues. So the man in charge of seeing to the welfare of 2 million active and reserve members and their families is saying that far more important is the tawdry ego of D. Trump.

(12,712 posts)I would speculate here that they smell the potential for a dictatorship. If that were the case, there would be two important self-centered reasons for playing along.
The first would be that you want to at least feign fealty to the new power structure, (if you are not already indoctrinated) in order to be able to take advantage of the potentially seismic shifts and chaos in the power structure itself. That's simple opportunism.
The second would be self-preservation, because we all know what happens to those that are determined to be threatening or detrimental to a regime and that includes many horrible consequences as well as a high mortality rate.
In that kind of proposed scenario, the idea of reputation and integrity become secondary or even inconsequential.
However, the hold he has is multi-faceted and multi-level and the deceptions include us, as well. In my opinion, he not only knows the basic facts behind his distortions and act, he is able to then manipulate them or contradict them rather easily. This is a product both of his entire life experience and the practice he had on a reality TV show. He is playing the country like a scripted version of that and he test markets what will both get him "ratings" for his base of fealty, but confuse and inject chaos into our system while conditioning the society for his planned dictatorship.
What we see is mostly test marketing and the "characters" he plays are a vehicle for that. If something doesn't' work, it will at least manage to confuse and inject more chaos while you switch to another tactic. He does this in real time and you can note that by what character you see at the rallies versus some you see during official announcements, etc. Test, keep or toss, rinse and repeat. The little pretend battle with Barr was just for giggles and grins.
If that continues unabated, he will continue to refine it and utilize his campaign to continue to build the foundation for a regime of complete and total control and he has quite a powerful system, (as per our government, et al) in order to enforce that with. That's all you are going to see until the next election, if we make it.
That's just an additional way of looking at it in response to your questions.

(1,253 posts)He's been studying the transmission of disease for years. Been at the NIH for years. He's done good work.
What are his politics? I don't know.
Why doesn't he speak about moronic statements by tRump instead of just politely correcting them? I have clue about that.
HE DOESN'T WANT PEOPLE TO DIE!!
I for one, am thankful for the "deep state" which I define as career professionals who do their job as best they can in order to do their best for our country.
Do they go off the rails sometimes? Sure.
I think the big challenge of the post-tRump presidency will be rebuilding the competent people who make our government function.

(6,383 posts)But lets start with the obvious, most of the well qualified resign.
Some of them may speak up, if they think they are done.
And some won't as they may want to take another go at it. Why stay silent, because its golden. Say nothing and nothing can come back to haunt you. If you condemn IMPOTUS...and he remains popular after he's out, that's going to bite you and likewise vice versa.
Those shilling for him, well, obviously shills. And yes some may be very qualified with a good long career, but I would like to show you Exhibit A. Harvey Wienstien...major movie mogul, wealthy, etc. But pisses it all of it away. Exhibit B, Anthony Weiner, again, a rising star...then bam! Also pisses it away.
Quite often, peoples successful careers get to their head and when it starts burning down by self arson...they pride themselves so much, they think their career is now really getting hot.
