The US has the world's highest death rate for the new coronavirus: Based on the ratio of confirmed deaths to reported cases, 5.4% of patients have died. That's far higher than the global rate of 3.4% that World Health Organization reported on Tuesday and even higher than mainland China's 3.7%.
Only the Philippines has a higher coronavirus death rate than the US, and that's because it has only had three cases. One of them, a man from Wuhan, China, became the first known fatality outside China in early February.
It's highly unlikely that the coronavirus is more deadly in the U.S.; rather, the number is likely the result of limited testing in the U.S.
Because widespread testing wasn't possible in the country in recent weeks, the CDC held stringent standards for who qualified for a test. Until Wednesday, the agency only tested people who had recent exposure to a confirmed patient, had travelled to a country with an outbreak, or required hospitalization.

(25,183 posts)that the Chinese are lying about the numbers there. I wouldn't put it past them.

(13,485 posts)There aren't enough cases with an outcome. It's statistically irrelevant. That makes it somewhere between .01% and 100%.

And MSNBC has been saying the same thing all afternoon and evening. What is Fux Ruse saying?

(7,715 posts)I have no faith in them or the CDC any more since they have exerted their intimidation/spin/control over them.
Do not believe one 'effin word that these 'effers say. They are in way over their heads, and this is a crystal clear example of how they are literally bringing us down with their incompetence.

(25,746 posts)If we're not testing, we have no idea how many people are really infected.
I keep on trying to point out here that the death rate for all those infected is much lower than advertised, and people here keep on telling me I'm wrong, that 3% of the entire population is going to die.
Sigh. Math ignorance is widespread.

(16,873 posts)Sadly the CDC and the Trump Administration is constantly giving different data and of the 321 Reported known cases of infection, only 30 of those case have been declared as what is classified as "Cases with Known Outcome".
That 5% number is coming from them calculating 15 dead of 321 identified total cases....but this is NOT how you determine the Case Fatality Rate (CFR).
To calculate accurately, you take the number of actual known cases with known Outcome and take the numbers from the only two possible outcomes:There are two possible known outcomes to calculate the Case Fatality Rate (CFR). NOT the total number of reported known cases of infection.
You take the number of actual "cases with known Outcome" and take the numbers from the only two possible outcomes:
1) Dead -OR- 2) Recovered
So, of the 30 total cases with "known outcome" - 15 are dead and 15 are classified as recovered.
That's a 50% CFR not 5%
There currently officially remains 291 "Active Cases" in US as of March 6th 9AM PST that are "Known reported cases of infection" of which 8 are listed in Serious or Critical condition. Based on WHO data, any of those 8 people over 60 with underlying conditions will die. Assuming at least 50% of them die, we can expect 4 more deaths in the next week.
The biggest question is that of the current 291 Active Cases, of which presumably 283 have mild symptoms/mild condition, most if not all will recover - based on WHO data.
We will learn with time what the actual rate is. I pray it is not the 50% rate that the data shows currently based on proper calculations. My data analysis shows that it is currently worldwide about 5.8% average.
China has a current CFR of 5.24%
S.Korea has a current CFR of 24.6%
Iran has a current CFR of 11.96%
Italy has a current CFR of 27.4%
Diamond Princess has a current CFR of 2.75%
Germany has a current CFR of 0%
France has a current CFR of 42.3%
Japan has a current CFR of 10.9%
Spain has a current CFR of 57%
These numbers are only as good as reported data and updates and will change as there are more "cases with outcome" reported.
The US has 291 current cases (this doesn't include the 21 newly tested today from the Grand Princess). But lets see what the outcomes are.
I personally want to know of the approx. 3000 people on board the Grand Princess, if all people were tested, how many are infected and then to see what the CFR is of all cases with outcome.
I want millions of testing kits across the US and for us to be knowing what the number of cases in US really is....
Not the number that Donald J Trump wants it to be....
