Last summer I toured Alcatraz. My goal was to determine whether the Trump Crime Family (TCF) could be housed there without disturbing the prison's current educational mission. These are my findings:
1. The Main Cellhouse has three tiers of cells. Only the ground floor is open for tours. Levels 2 and 3 could safely be used to house the TCF. As I have previously stated the TCF is not an escape risk so there should be no hazard in allowing tourists continued access to the first floor with the TCF incarcerated on Levels 2 and 3.
2. The National Park Service endeavors to keep the area open to tourists in essentially the same condition it was on the day the prisoners were originally removed from the island. This also means that Levels 2 and 3 could be returned to habitable condition without affecting the historical character of the facility.
3. The shower facility (which is this big-ass trough in the middle of the admittance hall with shower heads and soap dishes - which, interestingly enough, are made from electrical junction boxes) remains. A small amount of plumbing work and the installation of a new water heater would return the shower room to usability. Naturally, we couldn't allow the inmates to shower while visitors were there, but visitors aren't there all the time. They could easily have the inmates shower either in the morning before the visitors arrived or in the evening after they are gone.
4. The room that was the kitchen is still there but the equipment has been removed. Fortunately, commercial kitchen equipment is not all that expensive, especially since one of the proposed inmates owns quite a bit of it that could be seized by the federal government to recoup some of the debt he owes. As a special bonus, we could offer a "special tour" for, oh, $25 extra and let the visitor eat the same food the TCF is being served that day. Profits from this special tour will help to offset the debt the inmates ran up.
5. The cells are not in terrible shape considering all they've been through. I figure $10,000 per cell would be sufficient to paint, repair plaster, fix the locks, and replumb the facility. There is enough room to install the elevator that will be needed to deal with geriatric inmates.
6. There are living quarters on Alcatraz for the warden and security forces. These buildings are not on the tour so restoring them to livable condition won't affect their historical significance.
7. Inmates in American prisons that are not at the "administrative maximum" level are given the opportunity to be outside for a short period of time every day. They would have to remove all the tourists from the island during this period. With a modicum of crowd control this will be easily achieved.
8. No executions were ever done on Alcatraz and, so far as we know, none of the TCF except for Erik Prince has done anything even remotely resembling a capital offense. (And our government asked Erik Prince to do those things, so he should be okay.) Therefore, no restoration of the gallows, garrote, guillotine or firing-squad range will be necessary.
9. If we were to start restoring Alcatraz in February 2021, it would be ready for prisoner intake by July 2021 at the earliest. The TCF could be housed in the prison on Imrali Island, Turkey, until Alcatraz was ready for them.
10. There are no downsides to locking Trump up in Alcatraz, and many benefits.
