I did something today that I have NEVER ever done before in my life....

Last edited Mon Mar 9, 2020, 11:52 AM - Edit history (1)

If I had done it in my teenage years, I would have been cleaned up off the floor with Dawn and a sponge.

I was watching CNN, Fareed Zakaria's interview of Hillary Clinton, and they were talking about corruption in the tRump administration. My mother, 92 years old, a hater of everything Clinton, who voted for tRump in '16, came in the room, and saw what the conversation was about, and said, "Well, there's the pot calling the kettle black."

It thoroughly disgusted me, and I just reacted, and said, "Oh, shut up!" Never in my 60+ years of life have I told my mother to shut up. It even shocked me, after I said it. But I don't think my deaf-as-a-rock mother heard it; if she did, she didn't react. But she didn't say another word about the interview.

Our primary is Tuesday. She doesn't drive, but I know she will want to go vote (she never misses an election), and I'm pretty certain she would vote for that orange bastard again. But I am VERY tempted to tell her that I won't drive her to the polls if she is going to vote for him.

Whaat to do?

In November, you might oops misplace the car keys after you've voted yourself.

When my mom was living I helped her walk the one block to the polling place every election, while she was still able, and helped her fill out the absentee ballot, as long as she was able to do that, when she could no longer walk the block. I never regretted doing that, even though I knew her vote would negate mine every time. She voted straight Republican ticket her entire life. Edited to add that her TV was hard-wired to Fox News. That was rough.

Good luck.

- Mom has a differing political opinion than you
- Mom expressed that opinion
- You not only told her to shut up but have contemplated retaliating by not taking her to vote in the primary

And you're trying to make your mom out to be the bad person?

I just bristle at any suggestion that votes should be stifled. I kept encouraging my son to vote, even though I knew he was going to vote for Bernie. Voting is important.

You won't have to drive her anywhere.

If she can't fill out the absentee ballot and mail it in, well that is HER problem.

As for now, tell her you cannot continue to reinforce her behavior and thoughts by taking her to the polls to vote for a Nazi. Tell her to take a taxi to the polls!

Luckily I do not live with someone that votes for pukes. If I did, I would have thrown said person out a long time ago.

I have relatives that are pukes and I never hear from them thank god.

Do what you must to SAVE your sanity!

Believes in Trump or is republican. My younger daughter just told me my older daughter just registered to be a republican and that she didn’t want to tell me.

I admit knowing she lives in CA makes me feel better that it won’t change anything. she has been making really good money and upset at the higher taxes.

I signed my 93 yr old mom up for voting by mail, maybe that would help in your situation.

Mon Mar 9, 2020, 11:36 AM
Mar 2020

On election day in 2008 I went out to Allentown area of PA to get the vote out. Many trips to the polls later and canvassing and we uncovered two elderly people who had no ride.

Mr. Berryhill was an 'up souther/great migrationist' proud to vote for a black man.
Mrs. Irish Immigrant's son refused to take her to the polls to vote for Obama.

Good times - the arguments in my car over black vs Irish and how Obama was good for both - with me threatening to pull the car over if they didn't knock it off!

It's a Primary - take her to the polls.

ETA - Get back to me in November if you are Michigan.
