Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFacebook just flagged my "WE'LL BE CUTTING" post as "Partly False Information Found in Your Post"
I shared a story about Trump, at his "Fox Town Hall," saying "We'll be cutting."
Now, what was he talking about? "Entitlements." And what do Republicans consider to be "entitlements?" Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
Here's the alert I received, and the rationale behind it appears below.

THE RATIONALE, from the "fact checker?"
"According to a transcript of the event on March 5, 2020, Trump never specifically mentioned those entitlement programs by name. The headline and subheader of an article claimed that the president specifically said those were programs for which he was planning to reduce funding. However, the words "Social Security" and "Medicare" do not appear in the official transcripts."

(9,895 posts)They need to both go the way of MySpace and Google Glass and a thousand other "App ideas" that are essentially useless and too easily exploited in the wider world.
Cut the ties and feel the freedom of life beyond social media!!! #LifeBeyond !!!

(82,849 posts)Of course, when Trump does blunder and comes right out and says something stupid instead of leaving it for his audience to fill in the obvious blanks, there's a small army of sycophants and toadies that fan out through the media outlets to tell us all what Trump "really meant." As if a man in his 70s can't say what he means.

(61,872 posts)They are doing this all the time.
The context of the town hall exchange is plain for all to see. Falling back on the official transcript is pure gaslighting.

(35,300 posts)It'll be hard to mess with OASDI because that's not a simple budget tweak. It's dedicated funding.
Same for part of Medicare.
The rest have no dedicated revenue stream: That's all the SNAP/WIC (whatever welfare's called these days), subsidized housing, dependent-child funding, etc., as well as Medicaid and part of Medicare and "Social Security" (the disability part).
Overgeneralizing is a problem. When they talk about adjustments to disability benefits that gets translated to "Social Security" and translated back to "OASDI". It's like a partisan game of telephone. But it means that we get outraged over "mistruths". It may be politically expedient, but it's still premised on a falsehood.

(957 posts)Things that are Entitlements are things that beneficiaries are receive because their costs were pre-paid. The word is based in the same roots as the notion of a Title for Real Property (which technically is a Fee Simple deed, but that is another matter) or a car (which is often called a "pink slip" . Social Security and Medicare are entitlements for this reason. Medicaid is not a pre-paid benefit.
In no way should this post be construed as supporting any reduction of either entitled benefits or Medicaid benefits (or any other benefits). I posted this because I don't like how right-wing talking points creep into our everyday lexicon.

(18,837 posts)...but that said, show me a Republican who doesn't refer to both as "entitlement programs."
Trump didn't have to "name" the programs. The Republicans understood him clearly.

(7,537 posts)Americans can decide for themselves. In the video the 'journalist' on Fox asks Trump "What will you do about entitlements and the national debt?" Trump replied "Oh, well be cutting that."
Make it a freaking campaign ad!
