and isolated it somewhat, it's everywhere in the US, getting exponentially worse with no end in sight,

(118,622 posts)nursing homes and stopping public events in places where there is the start of coronavirus, it spreads out the need for hospital beds over a longer period of time. We don't have the numbers but it could get scary if it does not work. So start social distancing.

(31,261 posts)He said that people paying attention to hygiene and spacing themselves from other people will have the effect of slowing the spread of the disease, buying time for development of a vaccine and therapies for treating sick people in lieu of a vaccine. He pointed out that unless we slow the spread of the virus, hospitals will likely get over-run.

(21,561 posts)old office buildings, strip malls, gathering places... start commandeering them to house covid patients only so we can stock them with the right treatment equipment and keep them separate as much as possible from the hospitals. we can't just turn all the hospitals over to covid patients or people with every day medical issues are going to start needlessly dying too either from getting covid or just not treating their condition.
The covid patients need treatment for respiratory distress primarily so if you stock a "popup hospital" with items to treat that, that is all you really need. and you save the hospitals to treat what they have experts and equipment for... heart attacks, strokes, broken bones, etc etc........

(21,561 posts)by the time you get these builds powered up, HVAC running, move in some beds and the equipment you need...... could take a while. and the hospitals stack up while it is going on.

(31,981 posts)Nothing there but speculation. The numbers of deaths in the U.S. are not going up in the U.S. exponentially. You may wish to look at the definition of the word. The rate is actually dropping in China where this all started. Almost all cases in the U.S. have shown to be travel related.

(25,848 posts)Where would they be built? With what materials? What about actual building codes being observed? Who would work in them? It's not as though there are thousands of unemployed nurses and doctors just waiting for jobs.
And before you say, "Screw the building codes", give some thought to the hotel that was being used to quarantine people with the virus that collapsed the other day. I bet that was built with little attention paid to building codes.
As for the two huge tent hospitals that were built, I'd like to know specifics about how they were staffed, what kind of treatment the patients actually got.
It's easy to say we should be building new hospitals in every city, but the reality is, that can't be done very quickly.

Not to mention many abandoned places have asbestos, mold, etc issues.
