A pharmacy tried to help people make their own hand sanitizer because of coronavirus-related shortages, but it posted the wrong recipe

But the recipe, which indicated people should use four parts aloe vera to one part isopropyl alcohol, wasn't right, since hand sanitizer has to be at least 60% alcohol to effectively kill germs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A concoction that's less than one-fifth alcohol wouldn't do the trick.

When Insider alerted the pharmacy to the error, Solman said he'd copied it from the internet and changed the sign. But the proportions — now three parts aloe to two parts alcohol — remain incorrect, since the resulting solution would still be less than 40% alcohol.

Around here I can only find 91 percent at a pharmacy. defacto7 Mar 2020 #9
And wouldn't anyone be reassured to find that their pharmacist is that bad at math? n/t sl8 Mar 2020 #3

Even after it was pointed out that the recipe was wrong, he posted another one with wrong proportions.

And if he did the math, the fact that OTC isopropanol is 91% would have him doing it wrong again.
Simply, it's 7 parts alcohol to 2 parts gel.

All that said, one could dilute the IPA with water to 70%. Use it to sanitize then use the aloe to prevent drying and chapping. Don't necessarily need to make a blend, unless one is planning to take it out of the house. One bottle of mix is obviously easier than carrying 2 bottles.

and sometimes I have to ask them to order it. 70% is the norm everywhere else. But maybe that's just here.

and two oz. spray bottles. Carry in pocket. Total cost...less than 2 dollars. Never trusted store bought hand sanitizer.

Not just this year, every winter season we dose with natural immune system boosters. A “tea” made from Prunella Vulgaris, Bee Balm and Yarrow with Elderberry syrup added sometimes for a flavorful boost. I’ll add Meadowsweet in sometimes if we have little muscle aches and pains it’s a great pain reliever. These are herbs that have been known to the medical profession for a long time.

Have not had the flu or colds for years.

I’ve made “tea” bags for the neighbors

Read this article it is not against EO but has warnings and a safe way to use. EO is very strong which by itself is no problem. I have a problem with the amount of raw materials it takes to make.
I prefer the whole herb, unadulterated. I grow my own and none of my neighbors or I use any unnatural chemicals on yards for decades.
