Cancel Everything

Cancel Everything
Social distancing is the only way to stop the coronavirus. We must start immediately.

Finally, the most important responsibility falls on each of us. It’s hard to change our own behavior while the administration and the leaders of other important institutions send the social cue that we should go on as normal. But we must change our behavior anyway. If you feel even a little sick, for the love of your neighbor and everyone’s grandpa, do not go to work.

When the influenza epidemic of 1918 infected a quarter of the U.S. population, killing tens of millions of people, seemingly small choices made the difference between life and death.

As the disease was spreading, Wilmer Krusen, Philadelphia’s health commissioner, allowed a huge parade to take place on September 28th; some 200,000 people marched. In the following days and weeks, the bodies piled up in the city’s morgues. By the end of the season, 12,000 residents had died.

In St. Louis, a public health commissioner named Max Starkloff decided to shut the city down. Ignoring the objections of influential businessmen, he closed the city’s schools, bars, cinemas, and sporting events. Thanks to his bold and unpopular actions, the per capita fatality rate in St. Louis was half that of Philadelphia. (In total roughly 1,700 people died from influenza in St Louis.)

In the coming days, thousands of people across the country will face the choice between becoming a Wilmer Krusen or a Max Starkloff.

In the moment, it will seem easier to follow Krusen’s example. For a few days, while none of your peers are taking the same steps, moving classes online or canceling campaign events will seem profoundly odd. People are going to get angry. You will be ridiculed as an extremist or an alarmist. But it is still the right thing to do.

We will see first hand how one large local's casino & buffet is fairing in this?
Word was just 2 days back it was already a lot fewer folks.

The casino work staff is probably 100+ people in this large casino at all hours, how soon until they are all carriers?

Exactly part of the problem, this is going to get ugly!

They may have unwittingly picked up the infection from someone they interacted with, whether someone they know or a complete stranger in a crowd, or from touching a contaminated surface. THAT'S the unknown part about this and it will undoubtedly create millions of infections in that manner over time. And let's get real here. The population (worldwide, not just in the US) will develop an attitude that sort of normalizes the situation over a period of time, and it's usually sooner than later. Dr. Messonier on MSNBC said "over the next couple of years" the virus will be circulating. That's a very long time for the virus to be circulating worldwide and dying down and cropping back up. There may or may not be an effective vaccine developed within the year to eighteen month long period Fauci predicted. Who knows, it could be developed sooner -- just not within the United States, thank your very much tRump.

Someone on these boards referred to something he or she heard about a joint collaboration between China and Canada. What are the odds that the US would be thrown a bone by one (former) ally and another tRump adversary country after the manner in which they've been disparaged by this monstrous shitgibbon?

Right now the annual flu vaccine generally protects against a few of the strains that are expected in a given season. I wonder, then, whether a vaccine developed now will be suitable against any mutations that may arise between now and then.

Guess the unknowns are part of reason vaccine isn't even expected to be available for over a year

Even in a best case scenario seems doubtful that the corono vaccine will work any better than flu vaccine that only protects about 50% of the time but with milder symptoms and has to be reformulated every year while millions fail to get vaccinated at all.

Those students would be in their dorms anyway. Not going to classes minimizes the contact with individuals they'd meet outside of dorms.

Small reductions in these interactions can make a large difference in contagion spread, it's similar to compound interest at work.

We had a case in St. Louis where a daughter returning from study abroad in Italy came down with Covid 19. The dad and his younger daughter went out to a father/daughter dance after the older daughter showed symptoms and despite health officials saying to quarantine. hundreds of people in our community may have been unnecessarily exposed.

Fact is if he catches it he will die so we know are doing the following:

Other than trips to the supermarket we are staying in. At the supermarket we are keeping our distance. We wear plastic gloves when we leave the house, and as soon as we get home we discard in a special container and wash our hands thoroughly with disinfectant soap. I have ordered some face masks but the advice over here as they are not worth the effort so we will keep them until that advice changes and we will start to use them at that point. We are not going to social settings with groups of people and we are avoiding public transport.

Luckily at the moment I am not working, so this is really limiting our exposure. I am not worried about getting it, I am worried about passing it on...

In a state level swim meet this coming Fri-Sat-Sun at Ohio State. OSU is encouraging non affiliated groups that have scheduled events to postpone or cancel. These kids have worked their fannies off to qualify for this meet so it will be very disappointing to them if they can’t swim. I’m betting a bunch of parents won’t be happy either, but is it worth the possible risk to go forward with the meet? Swimming is a popular sport and the meets are very crowded with spectators squeezing in on bleachers, and parents in the common rooms with their swimmers. It’s a tough decision that’s going to have to be made.

Tue Mar 10, 2020, 11:50 AM

Things never change.

During the first half of WWII, allied merchant shipping was getting massacred off the East Coast of the US by U-boats. When you read the U-boat's captains stories, it was what they referred to it as "The Happy Time." The reason it was so easy, is the government would not demand blackouts along the coast, so the merchant ships were back lighted like a shooting gallery. The business owners did not want to turn off the lights because it would interfere with tourism. Money talked, sailors died and valuable shipping and merchandise went to Davy Jones' Locker, so that the hotels could prosper. After all the burned dead bodies, flotsam and oil slicks coated the beaches they finally turned out the lights......

Trump and team are waiting for the bodies to start washing up on the shore before he takes hard measures to mitigate the effects of the virus.
