If all the testing and self quarantining and cancelling events and such works

and we can somehow avoid a true epidemic...
We will hear from now till doomsday how it was a hoax.

Just like all the preparation for Y2K stopped a potential disaster made it a hoax.

We can slow it down somewhat but most people are going to get this thing within the next year or two.

Inoculating uninfected to cut it off from the majority would be great.

People are already dying and the media coverage, along with social media, has pretty much made that an impossibility.

Y2K was never going to be the problem the media made it out to be. The "potential disaster" was largely a media fabrication.

This is not Y2K.

No, that simply wasn't going to happen. We were aware of the problem, aware of the scope, and companies took the appropriate steps to avoid issues. It was never going to be the doomsday that some predicted.

Would you argue that we're approaching this the same way?

big precautions to make sure it did not happen. Because of those precautions the disruptions never happened. But many think the whole thing was a farce and a hoax and there never was any danger of anything happening.

So if all the actions now stop this from being a pandemic, I can see the ones who now say it is a hoax saying that it proves them right.

to collapse the economy, and even cause deaths by disrupting aircrafts, and interfering in emergency response.

I’m with you on y2k. People just don’t know all the work that was done to prevent disaster. Perhaps they should of let some minor but spectacular failures to happen.

with too many people getting sick at once, but nothing we can do will stop it altogether. Chances are most people will get it sooner or later, but it's better to get it when the hospitals can actually help you if you need it.

Including the connection to Y2K.

There must be a name for this kind of fallacy.

I remember one of the maddest I have ever been at the TV was during an episode of Penn & Teller's "Bullshit". The particular episode was about the Environment.

They interviewed this clown who was adamant that environmental regulation was an enormous wasteful boondoggle. His reasoning? The environment has been steadily improving for decades.
