This morning two Air Force officers were at the front door of a good friend. They explained how his son was killed in the attack in Iraq. Im really at a loss for words as I knew this kid his whole life. Keep the Roberts family in your prayers.
I was awakened early this morning to see people gathered on my porch. In my confusion I seen my daughter in law very upset and then seen the two Air Force officers with her. My son Marshal Roberts was the American soldier killed yesterday in the missile attack in Iraq. Please take a moment to remember my sweet son today and prayers to lift his young wife Krissy, his sisters, and especially Marshal Roberts daughter Paityn. My heart will never be the same. His Fathers message publicly

(6,448 posts)as far as just wanting to kill people. I do know that some soldiers enlisted to take advantage of the G I Bill and have their college tuition paid.
Losing a young life full of potential is tragic either way.
I was hoping all countries could call their soldiers back home because of COVID-19 and "give peace a chance". Being a Brit, you may have heard the phrase before.

(6,448 posts)that could be used as a poll tax by the wrong people.
Maybe an aptitude test/Citizenship test could be given to the candidates instead, including their Cabinet members and appointed judges. For some of those in this administration, a breathalyzer & pee test could be appropriate as well.

(3,557 posts)I was a child of the 80s and I came to age in the 90s. I was 15 when the Dayton Peace Accord was signed and NATO took over the failed peacekeeping mission in the Balkans.
I grew up believing that the US Army was a force for good and that we had learned our lessons from Vietnam. I joined the Army because I wanted to be the tip of the spear of a force that stopped genocide, fought for freedom, and made the world a better place. As a 17 year old kid, I believed every bit of that when I joined the Army in 1997.
Fast forward to 2004 and I found myself in Iraq, where I served with distinction as an Infantry Platoon Leader. I hated that war and never believed it was justified. It was tough doing what I was doing, but I did my best to be kind and helpful to the people I interacted with in Iraq.
Im sure some people join because they want to know what its like to kill, but my experience is that the vast join because they either believe they are fighting for something good or they have no other options to improve their position in life.

(13,869 posts)The day I got home after my Freshman year of college my Mother met me at the door crying her eyes out. My best friend from Kindergarten days had been killed in Vietnam.
In addition to completing the political radicalization that I had undergone during my first year of college, it caused me to swear that I would do all I could to oppose wars in the future. I went to several rallies before the invasion of Iraq but, without a draft to mobilize the young people, there was no critical mass in the streets to resist the war.
BTW, my son proudly has the first name of my friend, who died at 19

Oh I made a lotta sacrifices. I built great structuuuuurres.
He never described in any detail what sacrifices were involved in building great structures. What the hell does one have to do with the other?
And, um, I think we know the answer to that.
THIS is a SACRIFICE. THIS. The loss of beloved son, husband, brother, that seat at the Thanksgiving table. Its that voice that will never be heard talking or laughing or even Its forever. It leaves a hole in the heart that never mends. Im so sorry to hear this. I can only imagine how badly and how deeply this hurts. All I can do is offer all my prayers and words of comfort.

No good things come with war - I despair that we'll never learn how to stop those that would oppress others for greed and power...I will ask the Lord to welcome Marshal with love for his honor of others' freedoms that resulted in his final earthly sacrifice in service.
