Fear is spreading....

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1237891575897718791.html

I went to the grocery store this afternoon. As I was walking in I heard a woman yell to me from her car. I walked over and found an elderly woman and her husband. She cracked her window open a bit more, and explained to me nearly in tears that they are afraid to go in the store.

Afraid to get sick as they are in their 80’s and hear that the novel coronavirus is affecting older people disproportionately. And that they don’t have family around to help them out. Through the crack in the window she handed me a $100 bill and a grocery list, and asked if I
would be willing to buy her groceries.

I bought the groceries and placed them in her trunk, and gave her back the change. She told me she had been sitting in the car for nearly 45 min before I had arrived, waiting to ask the right person for help.

I know it’s a time of hysteria and nerves, but offer to help anyone you can. Not everyone has people to turn to.

...and stocked up. NOT hoarded.
What happens to people who simply do not have the money?
44% of American workers make $18K or under per year.
Living poor...from paycheck to paycheck.
And they can't take time off and get NO pay.
These are the things of which Collapses & Revolutions are made.

Hardly a spot in the lot. Turned the car around, got a six pack at the liquor store and will make Risotto with ham which I already have. Saw one dude leaving with a cart full of TP.

Walmart employee will bag all your items, then just drive up to pick up area and a Walmart worker will load the bags in your car's trunk.
No exposure to tons of people inside the store, and very convenient.

I was just thinking yesterday that we need to slap ourselves out of this panic and fear and start acting like the Brits did during the Blitz, when they had to endure bombings and blackouts and air raid shelters. And we need to see if our older neighbors need any help.

And then I thought, hey, I’m one of those older people, and no one from any of the 40 units in our building has asked us if we need anything! (We don’t )

Word of advice if you know any older people unable or too scared to go to the grocery. For the past two years I’ve been using Instacart to buy groceries and household supplies for my 94-year-old mother, who lives in another city and state, and it’s worked out extremely well. In her area I can order from Kroger’s, Costco, Target, and others. And it’s delivered within 2 hours (free, with annual membership). They just sent email today detailing their new health safety precautions for their shoppers and option to “leave at doorstep” if desired.

They currently list 68,310 cases of people recovered and 4,718 deaths.

So, out of 73,028 cases with a resolution, 4,718 end in death. That's a mortality rate of 6.5%

That's scary.

Italy is showing 1,045 recovered and 827 dead, totaling 1,872 cases. That's 44.2%

That's terrifying.
