https://sunnybrook.ca/research/media/item.asp?c=2&i=2069&f=covid-19-isolated-2020A team of researchers from Sunnybrook, McMaster University (opens in a new window) and the University of Toronto (opens in a new window) has isolated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the agent responsible for the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19.
Thanks to nimble collaboration, the team was able to culture the virus from two clinical specimens in a Level 3 containment facility.
We need key tools to develop solutions to this pandemic. While the immediate response is crucial, longer-term solutions come from essential research into this novel virus, said Dr. Samira Mubareka, microbiologist and infectious diseases physician at Sunnybrook.
The isolated virus will help researchers in Canada and across the world develop better diagnostic testing, treatments and vaccines, and gain a better understanding of SARS-CoV-2 biology, evolution and clinical shedding.

Of course testing will take a while.
University of Queenslands development of a vaccine candidate
We congratulate the University of Queensland (UQ) on the creation of the vaccine candidate for coronavirus, COVID-19, which was achieved in just three weeks. A huge early achievement in the rapid response to the coronavirus outbreak.
UQs vaccine candidate will now move to further testing at CSIROs state-of-the-art biologics production facility in Melbourne where our scientists have begun small-scale testing.
After the initial small-scale testing, we will scale up production of the vaccine candidate using best-practice manufacturing standards for UQ to continue with the next stage of toxicology studies and testing.
Vaccine development for coronavirus is being done through the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), which has funded four consortia so far, one of which is led by The University of Queensland (UQ).

It's a start. I know it's going to take a long time to get to the end of this road, but at least it's a start.
To all those working on this, on behalf of the entire population of this planet, thank you and bless you.
