General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI work at a grocery store/food emporium.
Customers with packed shopping carts. Customers four carts deep on each aisle.
You'd think they were shopping for their bomb shelters or a snow storm.
I'm talking about one guy who bought 10 packages of bacon, 10 packages of wings, 10 whole chickens, four gallons of milk, and more, much more. Lines were viable when the store closed at 10 last night.

(17,984 posts)Middle Ohio. Went to Krogers at 8 AM. Both parking lot, store were packed. Lines to the registers were clear down the store. I finally made it to a self service that opened,5th in line.
Total shock for me, around noon I went to the Library. Kroger lot, still packed.

The Walmart I was in yesterday was so busy they opened a third register....

A friend called, she decided to go to Kroger early because I always do. She lives across town.
Was told the COSTCO was an absolute mad house yesterday. Been this way all week.

(64,931 posts)All six self checkouts were open and one regular checkout. I went through that one and cashier was very efficient. The bagger not so efficient. Only one person in front of me.
I stopped by a noon for a couple more things and it was packed. They had gotten some of the paper towels stocked, but nothing else.

There is no leadership at the federal level. I am very proud of governors in Washington, California, New York etc. as well as localities.
Trump's and Pence's lies about the availability of tests and the mis-reporting of cases is criminal. Most people have figured this out, particularly after Trump's brilliant ( ) speech on Wednesday.
I was at a Trader Joe's yesterday morning in the Bay Area, truly surprised at the number of people inside. When I asked if this was normal for a Thursday morning, he said "it was probably the President's speech."
'Nuff said. Folks are taking care of themselves and buying in bulk as they don't want to go back to stores (at least that's my rationale).

(5,067 posts)The best thing we can do is to isolate now not shop again for two or three months.
The fewer times we shop, the more the virus will slow. We have to stop stop shaming those
who feel vulnerable. And encourage those who can to stay cloistered for the good of all

(20,237 posts)Co-manager said it's pandemonium.
dump is number one to blame.
As being being of the Christian 'Way', I'm praying and believing for this chaos to cease and desist, calling this demonic activity null and void NOW. I'm not scared, but of course my heart is for the less fortunate that don't have resources. My God, are we experiencing a bit like the suffering in Syria? Not even close. Nonetheless, it is a very bad scene. Compounded exponentially by the thug in the oval office and his cohorts.
I pray for all of my sisters and brothers in humanity on DU for their safekeeping and carrying on successfully. The Lord bless and keep you by Him and for Him. Amen.

(45,806 posts)people, not DT a**kissers! They would have started ramping up for a pandemic back in Jan! What's really sad IMO is the Republican Trumpites are saying he's doing a great job, talking to people and maintaining a positive outlook. He's an optimist and that's good now. When I hear people talk like that, it makes me feel like our entire Country is LOST!

(13,903 posts)Toilet paper has been stripped bare, tissues and water decimated. Cleaning supplies were seriously dented. Canned goods the same. Place was hoppin, and people were testy. Guy couldn't wait 30 seconds a lady to wait for a parking space honking the horn. Didn't want to wait for me the pedestrian in the crosswalk.
Thing is there are no reported cases in our region at all. Hopefully it stays that way, but all these conservative Texans aren't betting on that even they pay lip service to the Pig's lies about COVID 19.
Worse it gets the quicker people are going to become a holes.

(14,176 posts)And I had no idea it'd be anything except normal because most of the people live close enough that they can walk or easily take a bus to the store.
It was bedlam.
When I got there, I had to go around the parking lot to find a cart. Then I entered the store and it looked like it had been looted, especially the prepared and canned stuff. Fortunately, I make most things from scratch so I could get most of the stuff I wanted (although they were also out of Beyond Meat), but the rice, dried beans, and pasta were also sold out. Thank god I didn't need something like TP because I would have been, pardon the expression, shit out of luck.

(13,776 posts)Americans would lose their minds if the grocery stores actually closed. Plus, IMHO, there's no way the government would risk the unimaginable waste loss that food and agriculture companies would have to absorb.
I mean, I'll admit I've bought extra stuff, starting a couple of weeks ago before Trump admitted there was a problem. I had a tiny suspicion he might have been lying to us. So I panicked a bit, just to get it out of the way. But our memories are pretty short, and I bet that in a couple of weeks grocery stores will be pretty well stocked again and not ridiculously busy. It might take a little while for toilet paper to be back on the shelves, I bet.

(2,900 posts)They just arent able to keep up.
I went early this morning; 4 a.m. thinking that the Thursday evening panic buying would have recovered by overnight stocking.
I usually shop early morning; theres never more than six cars in the lot at that time of day; this morning it was two thirds full; and there wasnt a single shopping cart available in the store; I had to go outside and find a random abandoned cart.
The staff there told me they couldnt get it off the carts on to shelves before it was being grabbed up.
This started yesterday afternoon around 4 p.m. and hasnt stopped.

(2,109 posts)all checkouts were open and lines were 6-8 deep,, all full, full carts except mine. I bought TP, because we were out. Yay they had some left! But, overall,it was surreal. Not sure Im over it. it kinda screwed up my day with thoughts of "what am I missing here?"
