He Has 17,700 Bottles of Hand Sanitizer and Nowhere to Sell Them

New York Times

On March 1, the day after the first coronavirus death in the United States, brothers Matt and Noah Colvin set out in a silver S.U.V. to pick up some hand sanitizer. Driving around Chattanooga, Tenn., they hit a Dollar Tree, then a Walmart, a Staples and a Home Depot. At each store, they cleaned out the shelves.

Over the next three days, Noah Colvin took a 1,300-mile road trip across Tennessee and into Kentucky, filling a U-Haul truck with thousands of bottles of hand sanitizer and thousands of packs of antibacterial wipes, mostly from “little hole-in-the-wall dollar stores in the backwoods,” his brother said. “The major metro areas were cleaned out.”

Matt Colvin stayed home near Chattanooga, preparing for pallets of even more wipes and sanitizer he had ordered, and starting to list them on Amazon. Mr. Colvin said he had posted 300 bottles of hand sanitizer and immediately sold them all for between $8 and $70 each, multiples higher than what he had bought them for. To him, “it was crazy money.” To many others, it was profiteering from a pandemic.

The next day, Amazon pulled his items and thousands of other listings for sanitizer, wipes and face masks. The company suspended some of the sellers behind the listings and warned many others that if they kept running up prices, they’d lose their accounts. EBay soon followed with even stricter measures, prohibiting any U.S. sales of masks or sanitizer.

83. Most States (including Tennessee) make price-gouging during emergies Illegal
Sat Mar 14, 2020, 10:45 AM
Mar 2020

Tennessee has a anti price-gouging law on the books, the Tennessee Price-Gouging Act of 2002, for which see:
https://law.justia.com/codes/tennessee/2010/title-47/chapter-18/part-51/

However, like most of the 34 states with anti-gouging laws, the law is tied to declaration of a state of emergency in the jurisdiction. Unlike most southern states, Tennessee does not limit this to a Presidential Declaration of Emergency, but to any jurisdiction (state, county, or municipality) that declares an emergency. Also, the Tennessee law states:

Prohibited acts during state of emergency.
Upon the proclamation of a state of emergency and continuing until the state of emergency is terminated, it is unlawful, in any county or municipality covered by the state of emergency, for any person to charge any other person a price for any consumer food item; repair or construction services; emergency supplies; medical supplies; building materials; gasoline; transportation, freight, and storage services; or housing, that is grossly in excess of the price generally charged for the same or similar goods or services in the usual course of business immediately prior to the events giving rise to the state of emergency.

So once an emergency is/was declared in the USA as a whole (as Pres. Trump did yesterday, or in Tennessee, Chattanooga, or Hamilton County (of which Chattanooga is the county seat), his actions would be ILLEGAL.

The Prescott Bush/Brown Brothers Harriman financing of the nazi party and Hitler was prewar (pre US involvement anyway) and they were forced to stop, General Motors also were forced to cease their financial collaboration with Germany although it took a long goddamn time for them to do so. I do not know what profit Ford made (if any) from the wartime production of the factories that it had built in Germany before the war. Ford did, however, receive compensation from the US Government for damage that those factories suffered from US and British bombers. Henry Ford might also have had other reasons for dealing with Hitler (research "The Protocols of Zion&quot . Curtis Aircraft, Bell Aircraft and Studebaker sold equipment to Russia, was that profiteering. Some of the business arrangements mentioned were for profit and some no doubt were in part ideological but none were the sort of price gouging of the US Government that Harry was tasked with stopping. No $50 mess kits.

Maybe all the above is meaningless. "War is a Racket". Smedly Butler said so.

Cheers

I respect you a great deal, and I agree with most of your posts, and I have no desire to get into some pointless flame war with you.

Simply, and without overstating things or going into hyperbole, I believe that alcohol based hand sanitizers have a meaningful role to play in limiting disease transmission at this time.

Without downplaying the importance of handwashing, there are times when hand sanitizer is a valid, and sometimes the only feasible option.

I actually slathered it on my face, in my car yesterday, after getting out of BJ's, and getting coughed on.

And I have no wish to get into it further with you because, as I said, I regard you very highly here, and I don't have any desire to fight with you.

And, I feel the same way about you, CF. I shouldn't have been so flippant in my reply to you, so I apologize for that.

I got carried away by the interaction from the other poster, I suppose, but that should not have reflected upon you.

I'm not anti-sanitizer, I DO feel it is a good and handy tool for situations like what you just described (again, SO sorry that happened).
And, I think those guys are being total jerks to do what they did. That's why I said that it made my heart smile that they were shut down. I don't know how that turned into a melee, (I guess we're all tense and on edge), but I was wrong to treat you as I did.

Anyway, that being said, I will take your words to heart and do my utmost to be more clear in my intent henceforth.
And, to maintain a cooler head when discussing.

I fully admit that I've been in a very bad place mentally and emotionally for several months now (before this virus was a pandemic) and my attitude on this forum has unfortunately reflected that. I need to maybe take a break and reset.

So WTF is so difficult to understand about it? CDC freaking recommends it. Laughing about it as if it were some ludicrous suggestion is ridiculous.

If you don't have access to soap are water, using hand sanitizer can help avoid and stop spreading germs. Get it? If not, I fail to see any point of arguing with you and people like you any further.

"CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water whenever possible because handwashing reduces the amounts of all types of germs and chemicals on hands. But if soap and water are not available, using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can help you avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. The guidance for effective handwashing and use of hand sanitizer in community settings was developed based on data from a number of studies."

Hand sanitizer is nice, it's convenient, it's a good back-up, but civilization is not going to fall if it were to disappear.

You do realize that our situation is at critical mass, correct? You realize millions are going to die because a clown car is running this country. You realize they KNEW in January we had a huge problem and ignored it. You realize that this is March and we still have no testing kits, not enough hospital beds, not enough staff. not enough ventilators...nothing to prevent a death of millions.

Hand sanitizer is not "nice" it is a smart thing to do when you are at the market, gas station or convivence store and have no access to soap and water.

That you make light of this is sad. See Italy. We are only a moment away and fact is...we will suffer far worse.

Millions are going to die and they won't just be us elders. That is a fact.

Or people who work in places that have bathrooms, but they cannot possibly wash their hands after every contact with things that other people have touched a lot, like counters and money (think EVERYBODY IN RETAIL OR FOOD SERVICE)

Hand sanitizer ain't all that but it's better than nothing. Oh, and also, this guy hoarding it from backwoods Appalachian dollar stores and selling it for big $$$ is a complete reverse Robin Hood - stealing from the poor to make himself rich.

a sink and soap in their back pocket when leaving home?

Hand sanitizer breaks down lipid membrane that surrounds the coronavirus, helping to remove it. This reduces the chances of infection from touching contaminated surfaces. More practical and convenient than hand washing for people at work, especially when dealing with the public. Useful when away from home and soap and water. Therefore, helps reduce the spread of the virus, which is necessary to contain it and protect vulnerable people.

Over a weekend, I saw several specific items disappear from Friday to Monday. Everywhere these items were gone in every dollar and convenience store over a wide area.

I would have expected it if I'd seen a crowd descend on the stores, but, there were no crowds.

It was Elizabeth Holmes and Martin Shkreli like medical fraudsters and profiteers inserting themselves in the supply chain to gouge those who really need these items on a regular basis to survive.

How did we get where unethical people exist who not only do these heinous acts, but, they often get away with it at a profit? We allowed critical services like medical care to become for-profit commodities.

It sickens me.

snip--"Mr. Colvin does not believe he was price gouging. While he charged $20 on Amazon for two bottles of Purell that retail for $1 each, he said people forget that his price includes his labor, Amazon’s fees and about $10 in shipping. (Alcohol-based sanitizer is pricey to ship because officials consider it a hazardous material.)"

snip--" He thought about it more. “I honestly feel like it’s a public service,” he added. “I’m being paid for my public service.”

As for his stockpile, Mr. Colvin said he would now probably try to sell it locally. “If I can make a slight profit, that’s fine,” he said. “But I’m not looking to be in a situation where I make the front page of the news for being that guy who hoarded 20,000 bottles of sanitizer that I’m selling for 20 times what they cost me.”

So you think buying up all the stuff at the dollar store, therefore people in the neighborhood cannot get it, while you turn around and make a profit on said items is a a public service?

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — New York Pizza Department off Highway 153 in Hixson has found a way to help the Hamilton County kids who rely on the school system for their meals each day.

“I can’t think of my kid not eating,” NYPD owner Erik Cilen said. “So I said, ‘I got food here. If people need to come eat, bring your kids here, and I’ll come feed them.'”

After seeing the reactions from parents about being unable to feed their children due to school closures, Cilen had a late night idea. He’s prepared to give free food to every child, or family, that needs it during these uncertain times.

Vancouver couple resells $100K of cleaning products purchased at Costco amid COVID-19 pandemic
https://bc.ctvnews.ca/mobile/vancouver-couple-resells-100k-of-cleaning-products-purchased-at-costco-amid-covid-19-pandemic-1.4852363

VANCOUVER -- Manny Ranga and his wife Violeta Perez are cashing in on cleaning supplies online. The pair were seen going to a Costco in Vancouver on Thursday, filling their truck with boxes of Lysol wipes they said they planned to sell online amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

CTV News Vancouver spoke with Ranga Friday outside his house, just as the couple was about to unload five boxes of Lysol wipes from the trunk of their SUV.

...

Ranga told CTV News he’s “not the only one” stocking up on supplies for resale. He said he and his wife have three kids who can’t go to their private school because of the novel coronavirus outbreak, so they can’t work and need a way to make an income.

“The government’s not helping us pay our bills,” he said. “Kids can’t go to school, my kids go to private school. I pay $20,000 a year on private school and they’re not returning it.”

He and his wife are developers, and due to the COVID-19 outbreak he says sales have tanked.

“No one wants to go buy houses,” said Ranga. “And if you want to go see a house they want you to wear masks and things like that. It’s a bit out of hand right now.”

The Retail Council of Canda told CTV News “nobody was ready” for the level of panic-buying being seen across the country.

This is profiteering at it's ugliest. I hope they're awash in sanitizer but with nothing to eat. May they be boiled in their own hand sanitizer they can no longer move. Taking advantage of others in a crises. That's the only crime where capital punishment should be the default sentence.

and now this "public servant" seems to have been sufficiently publicly shamed into a modicum of ethical behavior:

After The Times published this article on Saturday morning, Mr. Colvin said he was exploring ways to donate all the supplies.

They weren't concerned with the well-being of the country.
They were only focussed on making money on a deadly disease that was spreading across the world.
Family man (his t-shirt says)? What about the families you were planning on gouging after you emptied the stores of essential goods?

Gouging is a common knee-jerk reaction of get-quick thieves. Don't defend these bastards.

When we finally make it though this pandemic, I think the stores should refuse returns on mass quantities of toilet paper, paper towels and hand sanitizers. Because that is the next step for these assholes.
