How is this different from H1N1?

This seems to be the go to argument from the MAGA, Covid-19 deniers, that over 10,000 people died from H1N1 and we didn’t shut the country down and blame the President. Now I’ll admit I don’t remember much about that, maybe because there was a lot else going on. But my response to them is usually “could and should we have done more then? Maybe, but how does that change the reality of the current situation?” To which they’ll say something like only 5,000 people out of 7 billion have died so it’s being overblown. I just wonder how this is different cause it’s a meme that I’m seeing pop up a lot from conservatives.

1. Obama admin had 1 million people tested within weeks of declaring Swine Flu a national health

... emergency and that was within weeks of a person contracting the virus.

In this situation, because there's no unfettered testing we have to shut down the nation because we don't know who has what.

If we did we can isolate those who are sick and keep on with life

Pres. Obama provided that leadership ... Trump has not and can not.

4. The short answer is that we were able to rapidly develop surveillance, lab testing AND A VACCINE

The full answer is summarized in this document, worth a full read, including those who want to believe CDC's faillures are NOT a result of Trump's near decimation of the agency and obstruction.

5. The MAGA argument means they believe all viruses are the same.

They can't shake that ignorant falsehood. The only thing that will change them will be when death comes to their families and the hospitals are turning them down for treatment.

Cult indoctrination will only crack when it fails them on mass.

6. If they're still saying this, they're dumbasses and you're not going to get through to them.

Nothing is until they start seeing the deaths.

So I'd answer, "Suit yourself. I'll protect myself, you don't. Lets see where we both are at the end of this."

7. In H1N1 we had better tests much quicker plus anti-viral drug and vaccine much faster
Sun Mar 15, 2020, 01:38 PM
Mar 2020

With Covid19 there are no anti-viral meds and vaccine is expected to take over a year so will not be ready this fall whereas we were able to incorporate protection for H1N1 flu into the next fall's vaccine in Oct-Nov around 6 months from time first US cases were detected in 2009.

Our Covid19 testing is much further behind so we don't have accurate data on infection rate and since no anti-viral med or vaccine until next year, the new disease will add tremendous strain to the already high fatalities from influenza.

8. This not influenza, this is not anything we've ever seen before. It's a NEW pathogen.

Even though H1N1 is a particularly concerning strain of influenza, it's still influenza. We know how it's spread, how it manifests, how to identify and mitigate outbreaks.

COVID-19 is a new emerging pathogen. What we do know is that it's highly virulent (very contagious) and is as Fauci said 10x worse than the flu.

We are at the beginning of this pandemic, it's going to get worse. Anyone foolish enough to think it will be over in a few weeks is in for a rude awakening.
