Coronavirus in Florida: Biggest one-day jump in new cases, as Broward County continues to lead

By DAVID FLESHLER and MARIO ARIZA

Florida registered its largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases early Sunday, announcing 39 new positive tests and a fourth death.

The new cases come a day after Gov. Ron DeSantis acknowledged that the feared “community spread” of the disease had begun, as people without a recent history of travel or other risk factors picked it up from their surroundings.

*We now have over 100 cases here in my county.

There are a lot of older people down here too in South FL - Broward County is where Ft. Lauderdale is and just below us is Dade (Miami) and just above us is Palm Beach. The repugs hate us down here because we are blue, if our older folks down here start getting sick in big numbers I am afraid they will just turn a blind eye....

At our local university six kids that just came back from school trip (Ireland) tested positive. Unfortunately the campus has been used as a polling place this past week for early voting BEFORE the announcement was made.

You see that all of the rural counties have no reported cases. It is not because we are so damn healthy, it is because we have third world medical care. The only testing is in the metropolitan areas.

I flew back from a conference a week ago, and had a cold...went to the family MD. He said it didn't fit coronavirus, but he couldn't prescribe a test anyway. All they could do was go by symptoms. The local MDs are looking for fever and respiratory issues, then they can do an x-ray or cat scan. At least one said they probably were treating coronavirus when the regular flu test came back negative.

Schools and universities are closed, all events cancelled. There is NO testing or general screening. They wipe off cart handles at Costco. Still lots of traffic and crowds. Our neighborhood held its annual meeting and cookout yesterday - I didn't go. They are planning a garage sale next week! About half voted for MF45...so some still say it's a "hoax".

Spring break is a mix. Fewer college kids than usual, but no official restrictions on gathering as far as I can tell.
