#CoronavirusUSA Supermarkets should open early mornings for 2 hours for elderly above 60, to protect them from contact with younger people. Also volunteer system for shopping and delivery should be implemented.....

(3,483 posts)Which is brown rice, white beans or similar, and ground pork or chicken. Hardly any rice, its all about getting enough protein every day. I eat this 2 or 3 times a day, sometimes a protein shake for one meal.
Tonight I went to the store, which closes at midnight, except suddenly theyre closing at 8pm. And I couldnt get anything to eat, no rice, no beans, no meat, no frozen fish or shrimp. NOTHING.
I walked out with the last 5 jars of Gerbers beef baby food and the last can of Goya organic pigeon peas. Thats it.
Im in Los Angeles and was in probably the largest grocery chain we have here.

(19,850 posts)truck driver for Ralphs and brings in the big rig with the stock. He sent this picture to my mother the other night. Not sure which aisle it was, but that's scary - nothing, nada, zilch are on the shelves.

(5,555 posts)I know an independent trucker (owns his own rig, does short term contracts / spot jobs). He was available and picked up several loads for a grocery chain this past weekend (I forget which one). He told me the warehouses are rapidly emptying and it will take a long time to restock the shelves. Everything in the supply chain is being rushed to market and it will not be easy to catch up.

(10,885 posts)I'm not sure how that helps at all. They can be carriers, infecting others, as easily as the younger.
If anything, this would increase the likelihood that any infection spread will result in death, rather than recovery since the populace would all be elderly.
Besides <little voice>, since retiring, I sleep in every day b/c I'm up late at night. Set the alarm to go grocery shopping? Nahhhhhhh.

(33,328 posts)Italy has not had as wide-spread testing as South Korea. The chart suggests that the age group 20-29 may be carriers while asymptomatic or at least active with mild cases.
If this is so, it makes sense to isolate the most vulnerable from other age groups where possible. Thus it makes sense having a separate shopping time for those most likely to suffer extreme cases. 20-29 are less likely to die from the infection but most likely to transmit it without knowing it, where testing is so limited as it is here. Italy's experience as shown in that chart suggests that those 50 and up may need special consideration, i.e., isolation from those younger where practical.

(13,776 posts)So if only symptom-free 60+ -year-olds were included in that early group, separate shopping hours would make sense IMO.
