I've mentioned my journalist friend who specializes in infectious disease and has been monitoring and reporting on COVID-19. She has seen contingency plans for an Italy-style lockdown in NYC and other major urban centers (including possible road closures and air/rail suspensions), and her view is that we should prepare for something as soon as Friday. As she puts it: decide now where you want to be and who you want to be with for the duration.
I'll note that there have been public calls for a NYC lockdown by the City Controller and members of the City Council, and that Dr. Fauci has suggested a national lockdown policy for up to two weeks. Additionally, Gov. Murphy has implemented a nighttime travel ban on NJ roads starting this evening.
I'm leaving tomorrow for DC to pick up my wife and bring her back to NY (preferably before evening).

(3,266 posts)same thing about as soon as this Friday. I think the closures have been announced in waves so we get used to the idea instead o shutting everything down all at once.

(16,254 posts)Even though the schools will be physically closed, they will be teaching online. It depends on whether or not they restrict driving from state to state. It sounds like if travel is shut down nationally before they start home, they'll be stuck in KW.

If they want that, they have to go all out and give the governors what they need. Eff Trump et al.

She just shut down all Dept. of Motor Vehicles satellite offices until further notice, and said afterwards they'll be operating by appointment only. The DMV!!! It's a horror show on a good day - can't imagine what it'll become now, especially with many still trying to get their "Real ID".

(999 posts)Got a call from a friend yesterday who is connected and he said Trump is going to announce the lockdown tomorrow and phase it in over the rest of the week. He did not mention Marshal Law but I really do not know how he could enforce a lock down without declaring Marshal Law. Having g a front row seat to this madness is no fun.

(62,444 posts)I don't know who Marshal Law is, but he doesn't strike me as very bright.
Secondly, you know who "enforces" most laws? People controlling their own behavior in response to laws for which they understand the rationale.

In 4 weeks for my sister's cancer surgery. I promised her I'd be there. If I get up there fear I won't be able to get back home. If I get up there I'll worry that I carried something there that she could catch in her weakened state.
Good point about picking where you want to be now and land.
cate94
(2,810 posts)That is a really tough choice. Of course you want to be there for her. I hope the four weeks in between will make the decision clearer for you.
Its possible that surgery could be delayed, which makes it more of a conundrum. But maybe the lockdown will do whats intended, and you can travel w/o worry. I hope so.

(537 posts)was Wednesday. I do believe the Tsunami is coming. And reason being no one taking it seriously last week. I drove over to the local park to walk the dog. its in the center of town and everything looked normal, people coming and going stores, out with the kids. Stunning really. I've been cooped up for weeks unrelated to current events. These people had not a care in the world. They werent leaving the store w full baskets or hoarded toilet paper either. I'm prepared, knew it would come to this 2 weeks ago Sunday
