Please take what I'm going to say here seriously..

I've mentioned my journalist friend who specializes in infectious disease and has been monitoring and reporting on COVID-19. She has seen contingency plans for an Italy-style lockdown in NYC and other major urban centers (including possible road closures and air/rail suspensions), and her view is that we should prepare for something as soon as Friday. As she puts it: decide now where you want to be and who you want to be with for the duration.

I'll note that there have been public calls for a NYC lockdown by the City Controller and members of the City Council, and that Dr. Fauci has suggested a national lockdown policy for up to two weeks. Additionally, Gov. Murphy has implemented a nighttime travel ban on NJ roads starting this evening.

I'm leaving tomorrow for DC to pick up my wife and bring her back to NY (preferably before evening).

Even though the schools will be physically closed, they will be teaching online. It depends on whether or not they restrict driving from state to state. It sounds like if travel is shut down nationally before they start home, they'll be stuck in KW.

but, it turns out, "individuals are asked to avoid all gatherings except for medical purposes, to get food, or for work reasons", when you originally quoted it, is now:

People should work from home unless they provide essential services, such as public safety, sanitation and medical services.
...
Exemptions. Individuals may leave their place of residence to operate an essential business, including:

Healthcare operations, including home health workers;
Essential Infrastructure, including construction of housing and operation of public transportation and utilities;
Grocery stores, farmers’ markets, food banks, convenience stores;
Businesses that provide necessities of life for economically disadvantaged individuals and shelter facilities;
Pharmacies, health care supply stores, and health care facilities;
Gas stations and auto repair facilities;
Banks;
Garbage collection;
Hardware stores, plumbers, electricians, and other service providers necessary to maintain the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences and other essential businesses;
Educational institutions, for the purposes of facilitating distance learning;
Laundromats, dry cleaners, and laundry service providers;
Businesses that ship or deliver groceries, food, and goods directly to residences;
Childcare facilities providing services that enable essential employees to go to work;
Roles required for any Essential Business to “maintain basic operations,” which include security, payroll, and similar activities.

In 4 weeks for my sister's cancer surgery. I promised her I'd be there. If I get up there fear I won't be able to get back home. If I get up there I'll worry that I carried something there that she could catch in her weakened state.

Good point about picking where you want to be now and land.

That is a really tough choice. Of course you want to be there for her. I hope the four weeks in between will make the decision clearer for you.

It’s possible that surgery could be delayed, which makes it more of a conundrum. But maybe the lockdown will do what’s intended, and you can travel w/o worry. I hope so.
