(4,465 posts)I was needled repeatedly over the last few years on how "stupid" I was, and how much money I missed out on.
I will be sharpening up my needle this week.

(7,286 posts)He was incredulous when I did it and probably spent the last few years gloating
Along with marrying a trophy wife, getting fat and taking exotic vacations from the fat of other people's money
I wonder how he is today?

(27,803 posts)I never changed them back, then I switched jobs. But I kept that 401(k) (it performed a little better) and it's my recession proof cushion in a pinch.
Doesn't go up that fast, but it held really steady last time around.

(429 posts)I hesitated and lost a lot before I moved to cash. Most painful. I know 401ks are the least worry the majority of the world has. Its only money.

(4,465 posts)I would have left the money in an index fund. I knew that Trump was going to crash the economy.

(56,828 posts)the Dow continued to drop until early March and was at its low point of 6,547 on March 9, 2009. So, the Obama Bull Market is even more impressive if you go from the low point

I remember that day cause the FA I was with was still wanting to short because Obama was going to screw everything up.

(65,010 posts)...those numbers show that the valuation rise under BHO was 12.035% per year for 8 years.
With the current plunge, the 3 year annual increase is 1.01%. That's very close to 1/12th of the gains.
Short term investors made their $.
People still building a 401k (you know, hard working Americans) are taking a beating.

(9,651 posts)Due to health reasons, I had to stop working long before retirement age. Had to cash out 401k to pay for medical bills. Now living on Social Security. That's it. And it's not a big number. I am well below poverty level.
But I'm lucky. My parents left their house to me. No mortgage. They paid cash when they bought it. I have a cousin who pays the taxes, insurance and HOA fees. And when I die, she gets the house. So she'll get all of her money back.
I'd be living on the street if not for my parents and my cousin. I can't imagine what other people are going through right now. I don't freak out about the stock market because I don't have a penny in there. But I worry for everyone else.

(16,725 posts)Thank God for the WWII generation who were able to live a middle class life, or at least buy a house to pass on, typically on one income.
Best wishes and take care

(9,651 posts)That's why I have a roof over my head right now.
Both of my parents were veterans. Dad overseas and Mom stateside.
I watched how hard my dad worked while my mom raised us. Once we were old enough, she went to work right beside him. He had a service station. I understood from a young age how the food showed up on the table.
For me, it's just rotten luck that I have the health issues I do. And I had no other choice but to pay off my medical bills.
I don't know how people do it today. My parents first house cost $6,500. The second one was $16,500.
I remember my dad said their monthly payment for that house was under $150, and that was including homeowners insurance.
I've learned to live a small life. It's not what I imagined life was going to be like when I grew up. But because of the optimism of my parents, and what they taught me, large or small, life is wonderful.
Thank you for your wishes!
And you take care and stay safe and healthy.

(1,200 posts)Gonna be pretty hungry in about a month. But, still like to hear about how many assets, et al, DUers have. Do any of the 'haves' whine about their own housing, getting food, no vacations, no vehicles? No, They are lucky they only have to crab about things that mostly don't directly affect them. The rest of us don't really want to know how much money, etc you all have.
Sorry, catbyte. Not a good OP at this time. I'll leave now...

(67,782 posts)...as part of their retirement program. When I left about 25 years ago it was worth less than $30,000 or so. It went all the way up to $180,000 a month or so ago. Since that time I've "lost" $46,000.
Everything else we have is cash. We're both retired and aren't looking for "long-term growth", just the ability to access it at any time.

(8,817 posts)how it is all Obama's and the Democrats fault and that he can't be held responsible.
I would expect nothing different from him or all the Republican Party and the entire Trump Administration.
I bet you that they are all thinking twice about those two huge Republican events and all the hands they shook and all the shoulders they rubbed with all their cohorts.........you know the ones that tested positive in the past few days......LOL

(111,254 posts)and that trillions of dollars just vanished into thin air when they could have been used for things like universal healthcare without crippling deductibles or reducing student loan debt or raising the minimum wage enough that work actually lifts people up instead of pushing them down and keeping them down.
That's the criminal part of all this. Money that goes into taxes is not wasted money, it pays for things that support all of us. Republicans only want it to pay for the military so their sugar daddies can sleep at night.

(3,528 posts)No, theyve moved on To tweeting about how this is all a plot by the so-called left-wing media to destroy the stock market and make Trump look bad. Believe me, I have already had a right wing leaning acquaintance mentioned this to me. I guess the entire rest of the world is also in all the plot!

(1,178 posts)Where I'm at that sort of rhetoric has quieted down....although none of them have come back around to say how wrong they were. My guess is they're waiting for the talking points to say how the right wing was the only ones proactive about this in the beginning.

(1,109 posts)21 years ago I purchased a habitat for humanity house that had been nearly destroyed by the original owners..I did most of the repairs myself and helped build 3 more homes before the local HFH folded because of ego driven stupidity. I paid it off 2 years ago. I could have paid it back sooner but with a 0 percent interest rate there was no hurry..
Now 5 children and 12 grandchildren call this a home base.
I ,to this day, will hear no ill of president Carter..
I will also hear no criticism of Dolly Parton. I had books because of her.
