Coronavirus Australia: Queensland researchers find 'cure', want drug trial

https://amp.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/health-problems/coronavirus-australia-queensland-researchers-find-cure-want-drug-trial/news-story/93e7656da0cff4fc4d2c5e51706accb5
A team of Australian researchers say they’ve found a cure for the novel coronavirus and hope to have patients enrolled in a nationwide trial by the end of the month.
University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research director Professor David Paterson told news.com.au today they have seen two drugs used to treat other conditions wipe out the virus in test tubes.

He said one of the medications, given to some of the first people to test positive for COVID-19 in Australia, had already resulted in “disappearance of the virus” and complete recovery from the infection.

Prof Paterson, who is also an infectious disease physician at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, said it wasn’t a stretch to label the drugs “a treatment or a cure”.

“It’s a potentially effective treatment,” he said.

The scientists did not say they had found a cure. That's the news story editorializing. However, emmaverybo Mar 2020 #4

They named one, the anti-malarial. The other was used earlier on in treating HIV. emmaverybo Mar 2020 #6

at best it would be stated as "we have a potential treatment that shows promise of limiting viral activity in a labratory setting and we have not started testing on humans yet"

that a scientist said exactly that, and a reporter heard the word "cure".

All my adult life, I've looked at news stories about stuff that I knew a LOT about, and found them inaccurate. It makes me wonder about stories that I read where I don't know much at all about the subject. I was down with the concept of "fake news" before it became a Trumpian buzz phrase.

Presumably, these are compounds from a library of approved drugs, so have already been safety vetted.

So name them.

Oh wait, nevermind, there's money to be made, my bad.

They said they were starting nationwide trials, but then they said they had already tested it on live patients. Seems like the trials already started.

I don't mind, it's just that I like accuracy. I guess they could have seen it in the test tube, given it to a few patients, then saw them get well, so now they will treat many more patients.

I hope to G-d it works. Oz is a special place. Trump, let's start getting those drugs stock piled, just in case...
