US airlines seek $50 billion government bailout after coronavirus outbreak

Major U.S. airlines sought a government bailout of more than $50 billion as the White House is urgently drafting a financial assistance package in the wake of the steep falloff in U.S. travel demand sparked by the coronavirus pandemic.

Airlines for America, the trade group representing American Airlines, United Airlines Inc, Delta Air Lines Inc, Southwest Airlines Co and others, said the industry needs $25 billion in grants, $25 billion in loans and significant tax relief to survive. They also seek tax relief that could be worth tens of billions of dollars through the end of at least 2021.

They also seek a package of $8 billion, equally divided in grants and loans for cargo carriers. Airports are seeking at least $10 billion in emergency government assistance, sources told Reuters.

"We have to back the airlines -- it's not their fault," President Donald Trump said, saying he has told the airlines he will assist them but did not endorse a specific figure. "We're going to be backstopping the airlines. We’re going to be helping them very much."

Priorities. Naked for all the world to see. Maybe they already knew, and we're just the last to know.

People like my father who's been working at MIA as a mechanic and now a supervisor for one of those major airlines for 40 years. He's worried he's gonna lose his job and have to take a job at Publix. Is this bailout for people like him or just the people who already own the finest in golden parachutes?

I don’t get how they are losing so much money when they are reducing all operational expenses, fuel, and labor.
Damnit they need to show their books before getting a cent.

This money is going to go to shareholders and executives and they are still going to have massive layoffs. I am so damn sick of taxpayer money going toward corporate welfare while the citizens of this nation consistently take a hit for the greed and ineptitude of those who are in charge.

I am so fucking angry I could spit nails! How much longer are we going to put up with this bullshit?
