Day 2 of Covid in the hospital

The one take away today for me, is HOOLLLY SHIT there are not enough tests. Plenty of 72hour tests but rapid is severely limited. We can’t quarantine everyone who may be infected so the highest priority is given to those who may have highest complications. I’m afraid to say as a whole we are behind this virus by a lot because we are learning while it rapidly spreads.

The system is handcuffed due to lack of available test kits. I’m afraid we are missing many diagnoses due to the incompetence of our government. Patients still doing well. There is no other person to blame but Trump and his admin. He alone fucked all of this up! As providers we can’t swab everyone because we don’t have the kits. Which means the spread will continue. IMHO

Tue Mar 17, 2020, 02:11 AM
Mar 2020

I'm in a situation that I imagine hundreds of thousands of other people are in.

I'm without a car right now. And I am sick, showing all the symptoms. Even if I could get my doctor to get me a test, I can't GET to the test. I have had friends offer to pick up things for me over and over, but every one of them has said they will not put me in their car. And I wouldn't ask them to.

I am picturing elderly people all over this country who have no transportation. Is there any plan to get tests to people who have no way to get to a testing facility?

I haven't heard a word about this. And I have to think that someone has realized that there is a whole section of the population who can't get to a testing facility.

I'm only in my early sixties, and normally I have a car.
But I can't purchase one until this is all over.

So if I have the Coronavirus, I have no way to find out.
At this point, the only way I see where I will get a test, is if I get so sick I have to call 911. And I am hoping that doesn't happen.

My biggest concern is my neighbors. They are all much older than I am. I had been in physical contact with them before I started to get sick. I self isolated the second I started showing symptoms. But we know now that you can pass it on before you are showing symptoms. I am more worried that I may have passed this on to people who have serious health issues to begin with, and they are in the age group that is at very high risk.

Would love to hear if you have any thoughts on this.

Is handling it is, if you feel like you fit the symptoms, you can call the ER and tell them you are coming. You show up stay in your car, and if you are not in any serious distress they will swab you and send you home for isolation.

But if you are showing symptoms and you can’t get to the ER then the only option is to isolate for 14 days.

I started symptoms approximately March 1st, by March 7th it was full-blown, although I didn't think to take my temperature until about the 10th. I have had a temperature since the 10th, but most likely sooner. Today it hit the highest it has been, although it goes up and down.

I guess it's time to call the doctor again and see if they can come up with some solution.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Depending on where you are, it's probably late, and I bet you're very tired. Thank you for what you are doing on behalf of all of us. And please stay safe.

I've had some symptoms that I really hadn't heard other people talking about. And a city council member in another local city just tested positive. They were interviewing him over the internet tonight on the local news channel. And he brought up all the weird symptoms I'm having, which really leads me to think I do have this. No one else wants to put a possible coronavirus positive person in their automobile. I can't blame them. And I would never ask them to do so. All of my neighbors are in the 70, 80 and 90 age range. They are at high, high risk.

So if you can't drive yourself there, and you aren't sick enough to call an ambulance, (meaning you are near death's doorstep,) you are pretty much out of luck.

Here's why I don't have a car. I had a Hyundai Accent that turned out to be a lemon. Hyundai bought it back in early January. I had to wait for the funds to go in the bank and have the check clear.

And just at the point where I was ready to go out and start looking for cars, I got a severely pinched nerve in my neck. After X-rays and MRI's, they discovered that my spine is a mess. I was supposed to go see a neurosurgeon on March 26th for possible surgery. That's postponed until Heaven only knows when.

I was in so much pain, and on pain medication, so it was dangerous for me to drive. The pain has finally settled down, and I'm finally ready to buy a car and what happens?

Possible Coronavirus.

2020 has not exactly been my year so far.

The upside to this? I knew I was going to be without a car for a short period of time, maybe a month or so.
And I didn't want to have to bother my neighbors to take me to the store every other 10 minutes. So I stocked up like you can't believe.

Costco may have run out of toilet paper. I won't. I've got enough food and everything else in here to get me through at least two months for food, and at least three months for toilet paper. Who knew I was preparing for a pandemic instead of just not having a car for a short period of time? I always swear I'm living in a Marx Brothers movie.

And if I think MY 2020 is going crazy, yours, oh boy!
I have watched some videos of doctors and nurses online, talking about their experiences. You are our heroes! Thank you a million times over for what you are doing. And please stay safe. Stay healthy. And thank you for your wishes of good luck. I'm sending some right back to you.

you can do your car registration completely online. Generally the car dealer sends all the paperwork to the state for the sale, so no need to do that. I'm you can use a fax or email documents back and forth that need a signature. There are also a couple of big Pittsburgh/western PA dealerships that have online buying and they will deliver the car to your door. In addition to Hertz, Enterprise also sells used cars from its fleet.

Hertz has a ton of them. One of the other rental companies, Avis or Enterprise, can't remember which one, also carries the same make and model. But, they don't have them in California. So you have to pay a transport fee to get the car to California. And then what if you don't like it once it's here?

Once I'm feeling a little better, I will call Hertz and see what kind of options they have. I was thinking last night that they are going to be hurting just as much as everyone else. With no one traveling, who needs a rental car?

I am buying a used car because I don't want to look at any more car payments. When I paid off the Hyundai Accent, I thought that was it. No more car payments ever! That car was supposed to last me the rest of my life. Didn't know I bought a lemon. Thank goodness the ex-fiance is a lawyer. The outcome was definitely in my favor. Hyundai had to eat it, big-time!

So the really good part is, I get to pay cash, in full, and walk away with a decent car that will hopefully last me the rest of my life. Fingers crossed!

Are you in a city or in a small town?

If a city, there should be services you can use.

If not, for goodness sake, drink lots of fluids and try to eat well.

If you can't go to the doctor, at least call his or her office and let them know what's going on.

Just don't tell them about the city councilman you saw on tv, because they may think you are "just copying" what you saw. I know you're not, but sometimes busy doctors will just grab onto a convenient excuse and hang on. They like to get an answer, too.

Ask for a home health visit and a flu test. You need to eliminate the flu.

I think I've read that Advil and Aleve aren't good in this situation, so if you can, switch to Tylenol.

You may not be sick enough to call 911, but you are certainly sick enough to call you doctor!

A week is a long time to run a temperature.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing;.

I was in touch with my doctor last Friday, and at that point, my temperature wasn't high enough, my cough wasn't hard enough, and I couldn't prove I had been near anyone who had traveled outside the country recently.

Apparently those were the qualifiers for the test last week. Now it SHOULD be anyone who's showing X number of symptoms gets a test! (Hahaha, I just kill myself with this funny stuff. Like Trump would ever let us all have a test. Can't have those numbers going up.)

This morning I sent a very detailed description to my doctor. If she can't diagnose me with that, whether I have the regular flu or bronchitis or Heaven only knows what, then she should throw away her medical degree. LOL?

I have a really wonderful doctor, and her staff is incredible, and I know they will be reaching out shortly. I did skip the part about the councilman. I just told them what was going on with me. Having a fever for 10 days is so out of the norm, and I've never had one for more than two or three days tops.

Didn't think to ask to have them send out a home health care worker to test me for regular flu. Thank you so much for that suggestion. I will ask them to do that when I talk to them.

I have been on Tylenol since probably March 7th. I take it every 6 hours. I can see the fever go back down a couple of hours after I take it and then it goes back up.

Hydrating the best I can. I can eat, not much, and I've only lost two and a half pounds. Darn it. You'd think there would be a silver lining of losing weight with all of this! LOL? I have to keep a sense of humor about this or I will go out of my mind.

That weight loss is from March 1st until now, so it's not much. I'm barely moving, which is why I'm losing very little weight.

When I have the normal flu, I can't look at food, I can't smell food, I'm praying to the Porcelain Bowl God for hours on end. That's not happening this time. So either I have a mild case of the regular flu, or possibly a mild case of Coronavirus.

Temperature went back up to 100.5 last night, highest it has been. Came back down this morning to 99.3, lowest it has been in quite a while. I did learn a big lesson last night. I should post this somewhere else so people can learn from me. I've been sleeping in a recliner, because the body aches are uncomfortable. And it takes forever to fall asleep, so I fall asleep in the recliner in front of the TV, and haven't bothered to get back up and go crawl in bed.

Last night I slept in my bed. Big mistake. Woke up in the middle of the night, coughing. Got up this morning and my cough is worse by about 50%. I really think it had to do with laying flat, rather than being in a somewhat reclining position. And boy does the cough hurt. Lesson learned, it's recliner only until this is over.

The absolutely wonderful news? It's not raining! I actually saw blue skies and sunshine. I went outside and just walked around outside my house for a few minutes, breathing in some cold, but fresh air. Another storm is coming, so I had to do it when I could.

I cannot wait for it to warm up enough to open my doors and windows and get some fresh air in this house. Right now that would feel like winning the lottery! Amazing how life has turned upside down, and the simplest of things are absolutely priceless. I hope that part stays in all of us when this is over.

Are you coughing anything up? If you feel like you have something that you are not coughing up-give yourself a saltwater steam. First make yourself some hypertonic water using preferably, distilled water. If you don't have distilled, you will have to boil the water first, then let it cool. Be sure to use salt that does NOT contain iodine. To make one liter of normal saline, you will need 3.5 grams (or 3500 mg) of sodium (salt). You don't really need to be fanatic about measurements, here. If you get a little too much salt, you will have a slightly more hypertonic solution; a little less, and it will be slightly hypotonic.

This is important because the number of milligrams per 1/4 tsp. (or whatever measure they use on your salt) can vary from brand to brand, and even within brands. This is natural; salt from one area of the world may have more sodium than salt from another area. Also, it depends on how coarsely the salt is cut or broken; usually, the finer the grains, the more sodium per measure it will contain. So look for that number on the package.

So, for example, if the salt you have says it has 450 mg of salt in each 1/4 teaspoon, you will need:

3500 divided by 450 equals 7.7, or just over 7 1/2 quarter-teaspoons of salt (of course, it's much easier to say 'a bit less than 2 teaspoons, and go with it that way). For the lungs, do not add baking soda. That is only for a nasal rinse.

Now, since normal saline is equal to 0.9% salt (just under 1%), all you have to do to make 2% is double the salt; you want 3%? Triple the salt...you can make ANY percentage that you want, just by adding another equal dose of salt. I would make a 3% solution. You can use up to a 7% solution, but that may be slightly irritating to your lungs. If 3% helps a little, try a 4 or 5% solution.
The salt helps thin the mucous so you can cough it up easier. People who have lung issues such as CF do this daily. They use a nebulizer. You probably don't have one, so a pot on your stove with a towel will suffice. You can do this twice a day. Highly recommended. This virus supposedly paralyzes the cilia on the lining of your bronchi, which usually move mucous up out of you airways and promote the cough. After breathing the steam for a few minutes, breath deeply and try to cough. It is important to get the mucous out. It will start a cascade of events if it bad enough. That is why people are developing ARDS. They also get secondary infections because the mucous acts as a breeding ground for bacteria. Be sure to inhale warm steam, not boiling hot. We don't want to hurt anything. I don't think this will affect BP, but check with your doctor if you have salt restrictions.

My cough has not been bad at all. Up until this morning.

I've been sleeping in a recliner for nights, because it was the most comfortable spot, considering body aches and pains.

Last night I decided to crawl into my bed. Really bad idea. Woke up in the middle of the night coughing, with some congestion for the first time. And then this morning I had a very dry, very hard and painful cough.

I think I have salt without iodine. If not, I bet a neighbor across the street does. I know that when I have just run hot water and put a towel over my head to let the steam go into my sinuses, it has really helped when I've had sinus infections. Really opens things up. And it's very soothing.

And I do have distilled water on hand! Thank you for the very detailed instructions. I'm just about ready to fall into bed, actually fall asleep in the recliner. I'm staying away from that bed! So I will do this in the morning. And no salt restriction so it sounds like I can do this!

Thank you very, very much! You have no idea how much I appreciate this. And my lungs as well!

Stay safe and healthy!

You reap what you sow! Hear that GOP supporters who vote against your own best interests over and over and over and never learn due to your hatred, purposeful ignorance, hypocrisy and shear stupidity.

They get what they deserve...NO PITY. I will shout from the rooftops, "WE TOLD YOU SO!" as they cry about being broke and unemployed and are sick with crappy, junk insurance and then blame the Dems for their situation. There are many fucking morons in the US and their king, their savior doesn't give a shit about them.

It may be until at least June until we have a viable answer or solution. Two weeks may not be enough.
