Just landed at LAX on a United flight from London. How did the screening go?
What screening? No one ever collected the form! No questions asked. No temperature taken. Nothing. All the way through in 32 minutes.
If this is screening, were all in trouble.

Ohio's on-again (pre-COVID), off-again (announcement by the health department; lawsuit by governor), on-again (order of the court), off-again (formal health department order). A least the presidential primary is off (per the order). But I'm not sure how you vote for local issues since absentee ballots are no longer available and the polls are closed.
. . . the saga continues today
ETA: The supreme court stepped in and unanimously (2R, 2D) closed voting.

(29,192 posts)from X country and ALL of them were infected.
Might.
We have 4500 diagnosed infections right now.
Chances are very good that means 45,000 infections.. possibly 90,000 infections.
And the rise is exponential, at a rate of 1.2 X every day.
so even if we took in those 50,000 people on 100 flights from Italy and they were ALL positive, it would dramatically add to the base of diagnosed infected, but in 5 to 8 days time, those people would add almost nothing to the probable infected population.
It was important weeks ago... like maybe 5 weeks ago when we had a chance of containment.
We no longer have any chance at containment.
What we are in now is mitigation by "flattening the curve" (dragging out the inevitable infection of EVERYONE by isolation as much as possible).
By dragging it out over months we do two things:
We don't overwhelm the hospitals ( we hope) thus giving that 3% of really sick people the best chance to live because they can be supported by ventilators and ICUs and doctor and treatment of subsequent infection (bacteria).
And, two, some will make it a year without being infected... and we have either medication or vaccine at that time.
But right now... we are on the same path as Italy... and that is really bad... max higher death rate than China... which experienced something like 2% fatality, Italy is much higher.
We will see shortly the effect of the nation wide lock down in Italy. The one thing we have in our favor is that we don't live in extended family units... meaning the isolation is much better for us. By living in extended households, someone who is infected but not diagnosed, there is a good chance of passing it to someone that is likely to die from it.
OTOH, we are slow to adopt a "lock down" mentality so...

(18,770 posts)...at airports supposedly being "screened", thinking of the virus bouncing off each of them, infecting everyone.

(29,192 posts)there were, what, 10,000 people crushed together?
Someone in each group was obviously infected (mathematically certain). And they infected (in those few hours they were crushed together)... possibly as many as 100 around them
It won't matter.
I mean for the people in the crush that get infected AND are 17% that get seriously ill... it makes a huge difference... and I'm very sorry for them.
But for the US in general... it won't matter.

(58,785 posts)It's way too late. The disease is loose and raging.
Btw, speaking of responses, our neighbors in Canada have been doing far better than us, but one province will apparently limit testing due to lack of supplies. Trudeau is closing borders to noncitizens, though not to Americans for the moment because of the "level of integration" between us.
All Canadian citizens abroad are warned to return home. Here in Florida we knew a lot of Canadian snowbirds would be returning home early, to be home but also to eliminate any chance of breaking the time limit for healthcare coverage out of country. Yesterday we saw a few Canadian RVs on the highway, expect those early departure dates are also being moved up and there'll be a lot more even tomorrow. The prospect of not being allowed to enter at all would be scary.
Trudeau said that Canadians who are traveling outside of the country currently should return while it is still possible to do so." Let me be clear, if youre abroad, its time to come home, Trudeau said. And, he noted, If youve just arrived, you must self-isolate for 14 days. Anyone who has symptoms will not be able to enter Canada.

(29,192 posts)not so much anymore.
At this point the scientists are thinking about how to save the max number of people if we ALL (near 100%) come down with it.
Hence the "flatten the curve" strategy.
What they don't tell you is that the area under the curve (i.e. the population that gets the virus), is the same number. Everyone.
We are all going to get infected. Unless you can maintain isolation for as long as the vaccine takes or some effective treatment.

At this point, screening at the airport is counterproductive.

(14,971 posts)The town of Bluffton and Beaufort County governments both issued state of emergency proclamations Monday, citing efforts to prevent or limit the local spread of the coronavirus and fund emergency resources as necessary.
The declarations came two days after the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control announced that three people in Beaufort County had tested positive for the virus and were in isolation.
DHEC said two of the people are close contacts of each other and had known exposure to a confirmed case of COVID-19 from another state. The third person has no known connection to any other case and recently traveled internationally.
