Michael Osterholm is an internationally recognized expert in infectious diseases. He has said for decades that most of these viruses can be traced back to Chinese wet markets.

(4,381 posts)Bats carry coronavirus, that does not match it completely, so they have assumed it was somehow from them, but the actual virus has not been found in any animal population. The first case they know of had no connection to the market.

(5,255 posts)I saw a Vox video - no link, sorry - that definitively linked the outbreak to a Wuhan wet market, from a bat via a pangolin. The video was heartbreaking and horrible.

(20,868 posts)The were shut down after SARS and MERS (both from wet market origins).
However, sadly, over time, they reopened them anyway.
They supposedly shut them down again but there are still many open in different parts of the world.
Greed rules in this sick world we live in!

(35,300 posts)like Ebola tend to be traced back to bush meat.
Which is either bought at the African version of "wet markets" or hunted by the consumer.
Zoonotic diseases can spread without ingestion, but it's less common and requires close contact. Domestication is close enough, but most of that is for the purpose of meat so it's a distinction often without a difference. It's been even been proposed that the collapse of Cahokia and some other Native American cultures was less smallpox or other virus transmitted human to human than it was caused by having the villagers hunt or take in Spanish swine and the diseases that the swine bore. After all, there are scant reports of much contact between Spanish explorers and the indigenous peoples along the Gulf, and for the most part those who were ill and infectious weren't going to be out doing active exploring but more likely to be at camp. Meanwhile swine went feral quite quickly and provided a nice high-calorie food source.

(35,300 posts)The report cited still goes back to bats as the most likely reservoir; it's the intermediate source that's the problem and finding the exact match in a bat population or intermediate population.
Getting a 98% hit pretty much means "that's the general source", which is, as with other coronaviruses, bats.
The rest is defense of the indefensible for no valid reason.
What's hard to make the claim for "the first patient had no connect to the wet market" stick is the surprise, after the claims were made, that asymptomatic individuals are often more infectious than those with symptoms. So in checking for a connection to the wet market they have to investigate everybody that the purported patient zero came in contact with for the 3-10 days prior to showing symptoms and check them for antibodies. (And even then, if there is a "patient -1" given the antibody evidence based on samples collected prior to the COVID-19 spread and it's shown that this patient -1 has a connection to the wet market, that's still not sufficient evidence because there might be a patient -2 we'll never identify. At this point it's going to be unknowable because later covid-19 incidence would taint any conclusions drawn from samples collected after early January.)

(4,381 posts)Alignment of the full-length genome sequence of the
COVID-19 virus and other available genomes of Betacoronavirus showed the closest
relationship was with the bat SARS-like coronavirus strain BatCov RaTG13, identity 96%.
You can not claim anything about a wet market. That is my point.

(20,868 posts)She is an expert in this field.
You can find her on twitter @laurie_garrett .
This is what she has been saying from the beginning.
There is also a doctor Campbell in England that has a video about the virus every day.
Here is today's video.
You can find more about the disgusting wild markets if you google it. One of the best ones I've seen so far was a group on panelists from Singapore. They have nipped COVID-19 in the bud almost.
to all of these people that I mention.
It is good you are learning about this, and yes, COVID-19 is from the wet markets, I have no doubt about it. It is the Nature's revenge so to speak IMO.

(20,868 posts)They do not know what this virus is, hence there is no "proof".
What we have is information, information that has been collected during past outbreaks of similar diseases that appear to have originated from the same situation, in this case it is wet markets which are a perfect breeding ground for this sort of thing to thrive in.

(20,868 posts)AMY GOODMAN: This is Democracy Now!, democracynow.org, The War and Peace Report. Im Amy Goodman. The coronavirus outbreak continuing to spread, with the death toll in China beyond 360, over 17,000 confirmed cases of the infection worldwide. A man in the Philippines the first death outside of China has been attributed to coronavirus. And the U.S. has declared a public health emergency, barring foreign nationals who have recently traveled to China from entering the United States.
Laurie, in Part 1, we talked about the gutting of the public health system in the United States. Now were back to China, where the heart of the epidemic is, 17,000 people and rising. How do you think the coronavirus should be dealt with? I mean, you dealt with SARS. You were in China during that time. That was what? Seventeen years ago. What about now?
LAURIE GARRETT: You know, this is really hard, Amy, because China is doing things that really no other nation on Earth could do. Its a combination of an authoritarian government and, you know, tremendous infrastructure. They built a thousand-bed hospital in Wuhan in eight days. Its admitting patients today. I witnessed them building hospitals in the provincial areas in six days, seven days. And Im not talking about a slapdash little shed. Its a real, sophisticated, you know, negative air pressure hospital. But the measures theyre having to resort to are so extreme. You know, basically, 100 million people in the nation right at this moment are in some form of shutdown or lockdown. They have to move hundreds of billions of pounds of food all over the country in mass convoys to the locked-down population. I mean, Wuhan is 11 million people. And Beijing is essentially under a de facto quarantine.
