The death toll from the new coronavirus in Washington reached a grim milestone on Tuesday with two new deaths bringing the total count to 50.

The latest deaths were reported Monday night from Clark County in southwestern Washington, home to Vancouver and its suburbs just across the Columbia River from Portland.

The victims were a husband and wife, both in their 80s, who had been hospitalized for the past week with COVID-19 at a Vancouver hospital, according to Dr. Alan Melnick, Clark County Health Officer.

One had been a resident at a small adult family home and all staff there are being quarantined and/or monitored closely, Melnick said.

The other was a patient at an assistant and independent living facility in Vancouver.
