‘A Lot Worse Than What I Was Expecting’: Watch a Journalist Take the Coronavirus Test at a Drive-Thru Clinic

A local staff photographer for the Charleston South Carolina-based Post and Courier, Lauren Petracca, shared her experience of being tested for the coronavirus Tuesday on Twitter via a makeshift drive-thru.

Pulling up to the testing area in her vehicle, Petracca was met by a man in a hazmat suit — who proceeded to lean into the photographer’s vehicle and insert a testing swab deep into both of her nostrils. He then placed the swab into a test tube to be sent off for diagnostics analysis for Covid-19.

“That was a lot worse than what I was expecting,” Petracca said, towards the end of the two-minute-long video.

called an understatement.

Saying that something is not going to be fun is a backhanded way of saying that it's gonna hurt like hell.

Her Twitter followers were sympathetic -- poor you! makes me rethink wanting to get one! -- but for some crotchety Boomer who pretty much told her to get a grip. My kinda guy.

on how deep those swabs go. I get frequent nosebleeds on my left nostril, there's no way I'd let anyone stick anything up there. But, we're completely hunkered down now (we did a quickie grocery run this AM, our last one) and won't do anything but go to the dump to get rid of garbage for however long it takes.

I need to get gas and may actually pop out in a few minutes. The more I read about the economy, unemployment, shortages, etc. and knowing Trump, Mnuchin, et al. are in charge I'm starting to get a bit panicky.

I mean, I'd expect just a swab like putting a Q-Tip in your nose. She just said it was worse than she expected. Someone on DU had one, and reported that it was a bit unpleasant.

As treatment to merely reduce the number of migraines I get, I get a series of sphenopalatine ganglion nerve blocks.

The doctor inserts a foot-long needle up each nostril until it hits the back of the nose and squirts marcaine (similar to lidocaine or Novocain) to numb that area.

I do this twice a week for 6 weeks each quarter.

Also, I get Botox injections, about 40, around the scalp line and in the shoulder/neck areas, again, to try to reduce the number of migraines. In case your wondering, yes, they hurt like hell because there's zero fat or muscle along the scalp line.

Two swabs up the nose?

Waaaahhhhh....

I've had close to two migraines every three days for the last quarter-century. I've gone entire seasons without a clear head.

The last few years have been much better since Botox, the spg blocks, and a new med called aimovig.

Down to 6-8 migraines a month now.

At least, when you get that many migraines, it forces you to figure out how to live your life despite them. Back when I used to get them only once a month or so, I could crawl into a dark room and ride it out. Can't hold a job that way when you get do many, so I've learned not to let the pain rule my life.

Over the years, I've learned that keeping my mind occupied is actually better than being secluded with nothing to do but dwell on my pain.

Pain is a part of life and the older you get the more you understand that. Never knew pain till I got(thankfully still free of it after 4 years) bladder cancer.

Well, except the smashed hand, the broken ankle, the badly broken ribs, multiple fish hook buried in my flesh and on and on. And I am sure we all have these experiences and many here way worse than me.

My concern is that videos like this will steer young people away from doing the right thing to protect our more mature and wise citizens. I’m getting so pissed at all the ‘it’s just the older people” comments I see. Not so much on DU, but it is pervasive. I’m not in the at risk group but many people I love dearly are.

But I understand statistics and currently this thing is a scourge to those over 70. Which I now longer see as that old!

That said, this thing shows early signs of following the 1918 virus that became more dangerous to young folks it evolved I hope it does not happen, but it is well within the realm of possibilities.

I just hate to believe that only their own potential deaths would motivate young folks to take this serious. Maybe I’m too idealistic.
