Think I'll donate some of it to Biden. And also Amy McGrath.

(15,703 posts)I know base is 1,000 but now they are saying depending on family size and income. Thats huge really. Income for family is probably higher then singles but families have kids. So it going to take a computation to figure out how much each American gets. To me that seems like it would take longer then April 6 to get it done.

(15,703 posts)Some say yes and some say no. However I think they should for many reasons. They are taxed on that income. But other reasons are they need it. Everyone has bought things they typically wouldnt. And so many other reasons as well.
I dont think it should be based on income or family size. Everyone gets a grand period. I mean if the want to say everyone under a million a year fine or whatever dollar figure but after that everyone gets the same amount.

My prediction: It won't happen. I'm sure the Republicons in the Senate will kill it.

(17,318 posts)And even that is an income that's barely livable.
The current proposal is a $1,000 one shot. Enough for a single month...and then what?

(15,703 posts)At the beginning of the week I heard 6 grand. Now that would really help. But I guess I didnt hear that right.

(11,949 posts)Sure could always use a few thousand bucks. But it should go to those who really need it.
jimfields33
(15,703 posts)Plus some make a large salary but could use the money for items they bought for preparations and other reasons. Some with large salaries also may be out of work for a while. I understand your point but it would take a long time to figure out who needed it and who didnt.

(11,949 posts)The wife and I are in a better position than most. Especially in Central Florida with so many super low paid workers with no benefits. Or savings.
I guess we could always give it to a local organization that helps those folks. They are going to need it.
jimfields33
(15,703 posts)Your point is taken big time. Our entire state will feel this for a very long time. So much is on tourism. I wonder how we will financially get out of this.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)But work in a big tourist destination. A real big one. Of course there are no tourist there now.
My team is still working because we are critical to maintaining the infrastructure. And still getting paid. My wife is able to work from home for now. No telling how long that will last. But many in the area are not working at all.
This is going to make 2009 look like a cake walk.

(8,699 posts)You just don't give money away for no reason. People with large salary shouldn't need it. That's just commonsense.
You sound like a trump supporter?
jimfields33
(15,703 posts)I am not a trump supporter. I can say I care about the working poor and if you are working ang get 200 dollars because you are single. Is that fair? And they make 35 thousand dollars?

BY the way for those in Florida who diss Publix for being run by Republicans - when I was leaving our local Publix yesterday, there was a food bank truck heading out of their back loading bay. Good for them!
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)It is usually voted one of the best places to work in Florida. I know 2 coworkers whose Sons started working there in high school. Continued thru college and are now store managers earning 6 figures in their 30s. But they do put in the hours.

(34,131 posts)I grew up less than twenty miles where Publix started. The first one in my hometown opened in the late 1950s. It was such an improvement over the little corner store Mom had shopped at, she shopped at Publix for the rest of her life. It is still my preferred place for groceries.
I've know several people who worked at Publix, both as friends and as acquaintances I only knew them at the stores for years and years. They always seemed to really enjoy where they worked and not be worried about how to pay their next bills as many grocery workers do.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)They actually seemed to be chagrined about the whole episode and not their manager are a very diverse mix of sexes and races. I think they were just still too good ole boy promoting those they identified with than a intentional policy. They are the only grocery that does not seem to fear Wal Mart. Or any competition for that matter. Shopping really is a pleasure there and they bend over backwards for their customers. BTW, their store brand stuff is very high quality and cheaper than Wal Mart. Even their mayonnaise. And this French descended Louisianan is a huge mayo snob.

(34,131 posts)She'd been a cashier for something like 20 years. Boys who were hired as baggers were promoted over her. I don't know if she was part of the suit but afterwards she was promoted to assistant manager. Since she was no longer a cashier, I didn't see her much anymore and lost track. I hope she made it into upper management, she deserved it after all her years of working there.

(11,949 posts)Until she was one in the other green uniform. Working guest services. 6-7 years she worked there. About 4 months ago she disappeared. Was tempted to ask but thought it would seem a little pervy since Im in my 50s! And she is quite cute!
Recently stopped by a different one in the area and there she was. In her own professional cloths. Now an entry level manager. I made sure I congratulated her.
I guess they move them when they make management. Good policy.

(34,131 posts)For a lot of years my husband did all the shopping. There was a Publix blocks from where he worked, so it was easier for me to give him a list and let him pick up stuff on the way home. So I haven't had the regular contact like I used to, though the cashiers and baggers recognize my husband still. I was just getting back into doing the shopping when this virus showed up so I guess I won't get back into the habit again.
I noticed that Publix now has a shopping service and/or delivery in some areas. I just signed up for it and if things get really bad I'll see if they can deliver.

(1,076 posts)And is winning.
So other grocers are holding their own against them.
Fun fact: The only Wal-Mart that ever unionized was in Jacksonville, Texas. The Hispanic butchers there got a union through by conducting their meetings in Spanish. It wasn't long after that when Wal-Mart went to no butchers and pre-packed mystery meat.
How anyone could shop for groceries there if they have a choice astounds me. HEB is so much better, in every way. Even their "store" brand stuff is top-notch.

(5,275 posts)A lot depends on how much I get. But I likely will donate a big chunk to a couple of places I regularly donate to, the local Food Bank and the SPLC.
Ill spend the rest to stimulate the local economy.

(3,702 posts)depending on how much and how I feel (dealing with an autoimmune disease) we may adopt another dog
We have one dog and one cat, our dog is 15 and we have been thinking it is time to add to the family but finances and my health have been barriers - but with husband working from home for awhile he will be able to help with the re-homing transition.
But we definitely want to funnel it back locally somehow
csziggy
(34,131 posts)I've been looking at cats online - lost our old kitty last fall but we're not ready to adopt quite yet since we're adding to the house. The local animal shelter no longer allows people to meet the cats (and probably dogs) before adoption to reduce contact between the people. Many of their pets are now in foster care and it takes a lot of moving them around for people to get to meet them.
I will have to stop checking out cats for a while until we're moved back in - it just makes me crave kitties even more - but I sure miss having one around!

(14,646 posts)He was discussing his opposition to cash payouts and said "besides, there is no place to even spend a thousand dollars right now".
Well, besides rent, or health insurance or medical bills, or child care if you still have to go to work, or food, or....
Yeah, my guess is most americans wouldn't know how to spend that money.

(1,076 posts)Is a working poor household, because I can't find work after having major health issues at my age. Nobody will hire me. I've tried. Cancer and diabetes and a cardiopulmonary condition--who will take a chance on a 58 year old with those issues? I'm toxic to them.
So we'll use the money to get caught up on some bills and re-build our savings that got wiped out from needing new tires for the car.
And from our 22 y/o cat needing euthanized. I still miss her, so much, but her time came. I couldn't let her suffer, just to keep her with me longer.
