He called tonight crying...he had to lay off all of his workers today because he cannot afford to pay them.

in addition to your reference to New York, let me add this. All of the Broadway theaters have shut down for a month. That means that all the actors, musicians, stage hands, theater workers and related workers are out of work. Additionally, the ancillary businesses are hammered: restaurants (waiters, bar tenders, cooks, busboys, deliverymen, etc.), hotels (clerks, maids, attendants, etc.), parking garages and so many other services.

Will these jobs come back? Maybe. But it's going to take a long time until this singular section of the New York economy recovers.

As a microcosm of the larger NY economy, the Broadway business is demonstrative of the calamitous situation we're in.
