Not to belabor a Bernie-ism, but, if the U.S. loses hundreds of thousands or more in the next few years, could it force us to seriously consider a nationalized solution here?

It will be a challenge to get and to defend in the best of times. Inserting it into the worst health crises in our lifetime will just be an impossible burden to bear with any reasonable results. The insurance companies would just step aside and be ready to jump back in after the government was broke and in crises.
It would be like 2008 all over again where the Government gets stuck with the shitty years and the private markets get to have the good ones.
