"SNIP....
On March 12, 1933, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt took up the arcane topic of bank regulation in the first of what became known as the fireside chats. He was confident that if ordinary Americans understood what was going on, the run on banks and the panic accompanying it would subside.
He did not address a live crowd nor Congress. He spoke directly to Americans, creating a sense of intimacy: I know that when you understand what we in Washington have been about, I shall continue to have your cooperation as fully as I have had your sympathy and help during the past week, he said. He proceeded to explain the actions he had taken and then posed and answered questions voters might have. (Why wont the banks all open at once? What if my bank doesnt open?) He made clear everyones cooperation was necessary when the banks reopened after his bank holiday.
The success of our whole great national program depends, of course, upon the cooperation of the public on its intelligent support and use of a reliable system, Roosevelt said. He concluded:
After all, there is an element in the readjustment of our financial system more important than currency, more important than gold, and that is the confidence of the people. Confidence and courage are the essentials of success in carrying out our plan. You people must have faith; you must not be stampeded by rumors or guesses. Let us unite in banishing fear. We have provided the machinery to restore our financial system; it is up to you to support and make it work.
It is your problem no less than it is mine. Together we cannot fail.

(70,683 posts)Yaas, we all remember how he ran his campaign by means of daily stunts (thanks Joe SCABS & Mika Mouse) that sucked oxygen while all other candidates had to pay for their ads.
Later, too late, we learned how all his life he planted favorable crap about himself & evened scores about enemies with the tabloids, even under his pseudonyms.
So under his so-called presidency he replaced government with perpetual campaign rallies, shutting down actual channels of journalism in favor of rallies packed with zombies who never question him, who just mindlessly cheer him and jeer his enemies - again, all FOR FREE.
And now, without missing a step, when the rallies being shut out, he hit upon a replacement outlet: Holding daily supposed press briefings - again, FREE. Think of all the benefits (to him):
* Audiences motivated into captivity via *panic*.
* He gets to Host these events, like his preferred maitre d' role at Mar-a-Lago, milking the illusion of "leadership".
* He gets a couple of "serious" people to back him up, their price paid being having to lick his butt in the process.
* And, again as always, it's all *****FREE*****!1 --------Actually now blatantly paid by public cash.
