Earlier today he said he expects 56% of state population to get the virus within next 8 weeks. I had a feeling this was coming.

(16,874 posts)I am currently on Day 4 of the shelter in place.
We walk the dog morning and night. We are other wise staying in and ordering things from Amazon, Costco and WholeFoods and wipe it down with rags with a chlorine mix.
Watching Amazon and Netflix, reading books, working out on the stationary bike, have a TRX system set up and doing yoga wth online classes.
My daughter is back from College since a week ago when all in-person classes were canceled and are all online. She is online watching lectures from the Professors via Zoom. She is doing group study sessions online.
I started a new garden yesterday after going to the local nursery and picking up lots of veggie plants and herbs...lots of tomatoes.
Making the best of it and knowing its for our survival and the health of our citizens.

(16,874 posts)My Dentist is available (like a Doctor) for dental emergencies. For example, I cracked a tooth in December over the holidays and I got a new crown on it in January. If that happened again, I could call him and I could go meet at his office which is closed and he would help me.

(51,432 posts)The country needs to lock down and test every single person. We know that this is the only way to get it done and over with. We also know it could return in waves. We must track down all who have had contacts with others and attack it that way. S Korea did it, we can too.

Let alone the explosion in numbers downstate.
Please Governor Cuomo; youve done a stellar job thus far...lets get serious about this!

(7,406 posts)I believe that it's imperative to have this ordered in New York. The last I checked it was over 5k confirmed cases in New York alone.

(14,483 posts)Seems some industrial plants would need to run limited capacity such as refineries.
Does this mean most of California's food shipments to other states will cease?
Pachamama
(16,874 posts)Almost everyone I know is working from home except Doctors, Nurses, Firefighters, Police, Mail Carriers, Garbage Collectors, Grocery employees and Restaurant employees (for cooking, take out and delivery services) and gas stations and Pharmacists and cashiers.
From 10-6 you can go get the essentials. Most people trying to limit the trip to once a week to get things. Rely on deliveries and wipe things down. Go for walks and try to get fresh air and exercise and keep the 6ft min distance to others.
The state lines are not closed - yet.
That is likely coming next week other than to essential supply shipments, but hasn't been announced yet.
Factories and manufacturing (the little we have in this country) are still open, but operating with less people.
KY_EnviroGuy
(14,483 posts)we're going to have a mess. However, our two big auto assembly plants are union and those guys will likely get some subsistence at least for a while.
Retail is going to be a train wreck and I think we'll lose a lot of small businesses that can't maintain lease payments.
Sad and historic time for America. Like the Great Depression with a different suit on........
Pachamama
(16,874 posts)....to make needed medical supplies and parts.
My daughter and 4 of her friends have formed a "sewing circle" and we ordered the materials and they plan in each of their homes to be making masks using the guidelines that have been posted online and to donate them to our local hospital.
If these 20 years can do this, then the owners of these plants and some local leaders in Kentucky can think out of the box for the "War Effort".
Meanwhile, Retail and Restaurants will be killed in this time. But even the local restaurants here are staying open at a partial level so that takeout and curbside pickup and also some of their waiters are staying employed by driving the deliveries to people and leaving them at the door. Lots of older people depend on the restaurants for hot meals. Some of the restaurants are trying to team up with Meals on Wheels as well.
We need to really come up with ways to make sure people are able to eat and stay home and healthy. We all need to do our part.

(255 posts)Jiffy Lube, locksmiths, car repair shops, printers, dry cleaners, furniture stores, plumbers, home builders, car salesmen, clothing stores, the list goes on.
None of these can be done by telework.
Pachamama
(16,874 posts)and the car sales and clothing stores, are open.
Retail is basically shut down. But I can go to get my oil changed at Jiffy Lube and I can schedule an appt for getting my tires changed. If my car is making weird sounds, I can call my mechanic and schedule an appt.
If I have a plumbing problem, I can call a plumber. My local dry cleaner is delivering. If I get locked out, I can call a Locksmith.
I can't go to a Bar or restaurant or go to shop for clothes or a car. But I can cook dinner at home and make a nice Martini. I can shop online and if I was in the market for a new car, the local dealer's sales people can be called by phone and would be happy to take an order and if I really wanted to do a test drive, I could, but I am imagining most people would wipe it down first.

(255 posts)I know these places are mainly open now.
What happens when there is a state wide "stay at home" rule?
Is the GAP really an essential service?
I am wondering how many small businesses will be able to stay open as more people test positive and self isolate, let alone get sick.
Pachamama
(16,874 posts)Clothing sales may decline because people staying at home like me will worry less about clothes.
But expect PJ sales to increase.

(16,874 posts)We don't have martial law here.
I asked my local police and they aren't going to fine you or arrest you. Frankly, they don't want to get near anyone and get infected and the local jails have sent out a request to not bring in anyone on a misdemeanor.
This is the honor system.
And I am happy to say, its been working great here in Bay Area and I believe Californians, just like in Earthquakes and in Wildfires will do what they have to do to help the community and we will set the example for the Nation.
Azathoth
(4,603 posts)Martial law is the imposition of direct military rule.
Curfews and emergency restrictions of movement by civilian authorities are done all the time, just not on this scale.
The "honor code" is a joke, like the idea of corporations policing themselves, and likely won't last.

(4,603 posts)Got news for you: people are the same everywhere. Doesn't matter whether they're from California, Italy, or Hubei.
Sure, lots of people will respect the order. Many won't, some in small ways, some in more egregious ones. And as time drags on, and the shock of the situation wears off and the discontent grows, that behavior will expand.
China is the only country that so far has really stopped this thing. (South Korea is trying but they ain't there yet.) And they didn't do it with an honor code.

(62,444 posts)The police can encourage you to go home. Thats not arresting anyone, etc.. The simple fact is that most people will stay home, because they stick out like a sore thumb if they are out, and theres really not much of anywhere to go anyway.
How many laws do you obey all day, every day, without having someone forcing you to comply or arresting you if you dont?
This type of question comes up in various contexts, and it always puzzles me why we dont all have a cop standing over us 24/7 and yet, somehow, most normal people manage not to violate literally thousands of laws every dang day.

And thanks for the scolding - I know what "Martial Law" is and I know that in my home in Spain, they have military out on streets and stopping cars and people and only one person per car.
I do know the difference and California does NOT have Martial Law.
PS: I spoke to our local police - they are having no problems at all and they haven't had to cite people and people are complying.
Also- they don't want to get infected and so they aren't going to endanger themselves. But luckily, Californians in the Bay Area have been complying and all love their state and community and realize that they have to do this for the health of all.
No - the honor code isn't a joke. At least not here.

(16,874 posts)Yes, we do set the example and I am very proud of our state. Whether it be in an earthquake or wildfires, Californians will be there for each other and the communities.
We won't need to do what you are describing...that may be the case in other states, but not here.
Good luck to you - but California wants to live and to set the example for others....

(16,874 posts)Most people are working at home and local restaurants that are still open in the kitchen and doing delivery or pick-up, their employees can go to work and home and the customers can go drive there (or walk there) and pick up.
Only rule is keeping 6 ft or more from people and its between 10-6PM and then essentially a curfew.
KY_EnviroGuy
(14,483 posts)such as pharmacy and hospital workers, trash collectors and grocery workers?
Just curious 'cause it's probably coming our way soon.......
Niagara
(7,406 posts)A pharmacist will usually have a license, perhaps even a pocket license. Trash collectors are most likely considered essential right now as well.
My other half works at a hospital and has an ID badge. If he got pulled over by the police, all he has to do is to show his badge. The hospital wouldn't be able to run without his computer knowledge, along with all of his co-workers.
My son is a personal shopper at Walmart, along with other job duties that he does at Walmart. At this moment, Gov. Cuomo considers grocery workers an essential part of the work force during this crisis.
Generally, with a stay at home order a person can still get food at the grocery store and see the doctor.
Adding: It's basically to keep unnecessary large crowds from shopping for non-essential items and avoiding large crowd gatherings.

I'm glad she did. But today I'm so scared & disgusted with Trump's ineptitude and lies and callousness. His criminal mismanagement, that I'm through with television for now. I'm listening to Emmy Lou Harris, eating a hot dog, and playing pool in the garage.

(51,432 posts)Did you have the test? I had "walking pneumonia" for over two weeks and my Kaiser doctor said I only needed to take 3 days off from teaching. Withing 4 days I had lost 1/3 of my blood internally and was too weak to stand in the hospital parking structure and had to have transfusions due to the severe anemia that was a result of the pneumonia. I would stay home if I were you.

Sometimes you have to wait outside since they are limiting how many people go in at a time and some items are not available but the employees at our local stores have been doing a great job keeping shelfs stocked.
So far from what I have seen and what everyone is reporting including our local police, all is good.

from the Trump pandemic dependent on how successfully the epidemiological curve is flattened. The current death rate is reported as about 1.5% with 14,366 identified cases, 215 deaths.

(51,432 posts)I wonder if Newsom will have to close the state's borders if tRump and other governors don't shut the other states/whole country down. We have to all do it together or it isn't nearly as effective. We have to test everyone, isolate, do contact tracing and stay home all at once. Big job but we could do it if we had a POTUS with a brain instead of a Sharpie.
